Rotary Red Ball Express

The Red Ball Express is one of the Telluride Rotary Club’s biggest community service and fundraising events.  It is a community service project because it provides local non-profits an easy way to raise funds for their organization.   At the same time, Rotary typically raises $5,000 to $15,000 for charitable activities.

Telluride Rotary Red Ball Express 2014

In a nutshell, the Red Ball Express is a race of 100+ large red balls down a ski slope. The first balls down the race course determine who wins the prizes.  While the race itself takes only a few minutes, the preparation for the event takes at least 6 months.  Rotary recruits sponsors and non-profit participants, promotes the event and sells tickets.  Non-profits sell the tickets and keep 80% of the proceeds.  More information about the event can be found at

In a typical year, there are 6,000 - 7,000 entries.  At $5 per entry, the event raises $30,000-35,000.

In 2014, 15 local non-profits have agreed to sell tickets.  For the first time, tickets can be purchased on-line at    With sponsors covering 100% of the prize money and administrative expenses, all of the money for ticket sales will be used for non-profit activities.

Rotary's goal is to sell at least 8,000 entries, which will make it the biggest Red Ball event ever.
