Develop an artistic eye and find new ways to interpret and render a still life scene by exploring a lively range of mediums (ink, pastel, watercolor, charcoal, collage) and techniques (line, shadow, color block, perspective). Susan will guide students toward composing their own dynamic still life from which they can create a number of paintings using various approaches. Together the class will explore principles of composition, color manipulation, contrast, negative space and perspective. Students will play with numerous approaches to painting and rendering using the premise of simplicity and form. Each will start with one color to block in shapes and shadows, and then begin to enhance the painting with line, pastel, paint and collage. For added inspiration, there will be time each day to peek at a collection of art books with a broad range of work from the masters - from modern to abstract to classical.
