AVID Dance: The Wolff & Other Works

Artistic Ventures in Dance (AVID) invites you to join us for "The Wolff & Other Works”, an unforgettable evening at the Michael D. Palm Theater. In “The Wolff & Other Works” audiences will see: The Wolff is a darker, thought-provoking reimagining of the classic Little Red Riding Hood tale from the wolf’s perspective. Created by former Houston Ballet Principal Dancer and longtime AVID collaborator Melody Mennite, the work uses vivid kinesthetic storytelling to challenge conventional notions of heroes and villains, inviting audiences to confront fear, bias, and perception through a fresh interpretation of a familiar story. An AVID collaborator since the company's inaugural season, Mennite brings her distinctive artistic voice and creative vision to this compelling work. In addition to The Wolff, the audience will enjoy two pieces with Live Music: The Center Does Not Hold is a collaborative exploration between choreographer Daniel Ojeda (former Ballet Idaho soloist) and Juilliard graduate and composer Kebra-Seyoun Charles, and commissioned by AVID for the summer 2026 season. In a unique partnership and working arrangement, it explores the forces of polarization and what happens when opposing ideals pull relentlessly apart, threatening the bonds that once held them together. The music and movement are being created simultaneously, allowing one to directly influence the other, in real time. Gerald Aprino’s Valentine is a quirky and humorous look at the battle of the sexes using a boxing arena as the setting for staccato and contemporary movement. It is really a dance for three, including the solo double bassist, Kebra-Seyoun Charles. Staged by Fabrice Camels and coached by Telluride resident Valerie Madonia. Founded by Emily Speed, AVID creates original works that blend classical technique, contemporary movement, and storytelling. AVID seeks to inspire connection through the power of dance.
