A Guide for the Holidays

Monday • December 21, 2015

The holiday season is in full action here in Telluride! All around we can see the stores covered with decorations, the buildings dazzle from all the way up the gondola and of course the ski tree stands high and proud. If you do happen to find yourself in our winter wonderland over the holidays, you are one lucky traveler because there are endless amounts of fun to be had!

Of course we have our extraordinary ski resort out the back door. We are very lucky this year in that the snow is already amazing! It is necessary that you get out as much as you can, to take advantage of skiing on such beautiful terrain. If you want a break from the skiing, but still want to stay outside, there are a bunch of other activities too. Sledding always comes to mind when you think of a white christmas, and there is a perfect spot on Firecracker Hill in town park. You could go extreme and hike to the top of the steep part, or keep it mellow and stay lower. Timberline Ace Hardware sells sleds, so no worries if you forgot yours! Also, you can take your friends and family up to the ice rink in Mountain Village! This rink in particular makes you feel like you actually at the North Pole. With the alpine buildings around you and the Christmas tree in the middle, it's impossible not to smile. You can rent skates both in town park, at the Hotel Madeline and at Bootdoctors! Also, nordic skiing is very popular, and there are a lot of pretty areas in and around Telluride! An easy access section is right on the Valley Floor, but Trout Lake is also a great spot. If you want to do something totally different you can try Snowmobiling. Telluride Outside offers great tours that give you adrenaline rushes and great views!

Relaxing with a touch of Christmas

Sometimes, however, you need a small break from the fast paced activities. You can of course walk around town and check out all of our unique shops; it never hurts to add a couple more presents under the tree. One thing to definitely do is head to the Ski Tree across from the Courthouse. There is a competition this year, on who can capture the best picture that represents Telluride, and one with this tree would be a good entry! You can submit here, and the winner gets a 3 night stay at Bear Creek Lodge. This Wednesday, the 23rd, Santa will be making a visit to Telluride! Yep, you read right, the man himself will be at Bear Creek Lodge to take pictures and drink cocoa! Then, on Christmas Eve, the Torchlight Parade with be happening. It is one of the coolest things to see. Skiers hold burning red torches, and head down the hill, making a long, glowing snake.

I hope you can find something fun to do every day, and have a great Holiday Season!
