It’s no secret, Colorado high country is experiencing unusually warm weather. But that doesn’t mean a winter vacation is ruined! Au contraire!
Telluride has four lifts running and will open 2 more, Lift 8 and Lift 9, this weekend January 6, 2017. Even with limited terrain, skiers and boarders can get their fix on perennial favorite See Forever. The snow is quite good, and with nightly grooming, guests are treated to fresh corduroy every day.
With the warm sunshine, take advantage of skiing to one of the 4 on-mountain restaurants and linger a little longer. Try Bon Vivant at the top of lift 5 for tasty French food, or pop a bottle of champagne and enjoy a plate of cheese and charcuterie, along with the views on the deck at Alpino Vino. Bellissimo!
Another great activity to complement your ski day is ice skating. Try the rink in Reflection Plaza in Mountain Village or the indoor rink in Telluride Town Park. Or check out other frozen ponds that have become pop up rinks in the area from the Beaver Pond near Town Park to Alta Lakes.
Hiking, 4WD and Fat Biking are the Perfect Addition to Skiing!
Tour operators have brought back 4WD tours. That’s right, get high above Telluride and experience a whole new way of seeing the mountains, town, and the historic mining relics surrounding are area ghost towns. And hiking is always a fruitful endeavor. Bear Creek Falls has plenty of hidden snow falls that are eerily beautiful. Rent a fat bike from Bootdoctors/Paragon and traverse the valley floor with a stop in Lawson at the Brewery for a tasting.
The Sheridan Opera House has a full-line up scheduled for January starting with Railroad Earth, continuing with two nights each of The Floozies and Leftover Salmon as well as Trout Steak Revival and the Victor Wooten Trio.
Telluride is a Destination in Itself
Although the holidays may not have brought feet of snow this year, it will come. It always does. In the meantime, enjoy the tremendous skiing we do have and try some new outdoor activities. Relax and revel in the beauty. Enjoy what Conde Naste readers declared as “one of the most joyful places in North America” as well as the “#1 Ski Resort in North America”!
