The Coen Brothers' new film Inside Llewyn Davis will be coming to the 40th Telluride Film Festival this Labor Day Weekend. The film follows a guitar-and-cat toting singer/songwriter navigating around the 1960's folk scene in New York's Greenwich Village. There's so much that looks great about this movie - Oscar Isaac getting some much deserved recognition + anything with John Goodman in it is gold in my book - and in typical Coen Brothers fashion, the music is sure to be outstanding.
Honestly, I think that's why I've always been a huge fan of the brother duo. Of course their dry, dark, hilarious plot and character development style belongs only to them - making it easy to quote a handful of their movies, verbatim - but their deep understanding of good music and integral placement to a scene is silver screen brilliance. "Hotel California" introducing you to Jesus Quintana for the first time, Raising Arizona's entire chase scene to the twang of "Way Out There", singing along to "Man of Constant Sorrow" in O Brother, Where Art Thou? or the intro bowling montage to "The Man in Me" - these are the memorable moments in the Coen story telling process.
Inside Llewyn Davis will be the fourth collaboration with multiple Grammy and Academy Award winning musician, songwriter and record producer, T-Bone Brunett. He helped perfectly place Kenny Rogers, Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan hits into The Big Lebowski and some say T-Bone helped pave the way for the folk music resurgence during the late 90's with his work on O Brother, Where Art Thou?. In a time where record companies were still very much in control, the O Brother collaborations were done without any commercial considerations whatsoever on the cusp of the internet boom and went on to win five Grammys, Album of the Year and rake in millions of dollars. Inside Llewyn Davis' soundtrack will be nothing short of superb. The soundtrack was produced by T-Bone, Joel & Ethan Coen, and features performances by Oscar Isaac, Justin Timberlake, Marcus Mumford, Carey Mulligan, The Punch Brothers and many more.
The 40th Telluride Film Festival schedule was released this morning and all signs are pointing to a Coen Brothers, Robert Redford and T-Bone Brunett tributes not to be missed. The Punch Brothers, who recently contributed to the forthcoming Inside Llewyn Davis soundtrack, will play a free concert in Telluride Town Park on Wednesday, August 28th. After the show, The Big Lebowski is rumored to be playing at the free Abel Gance Open Air Cinema in Elks Park at nightfall. I'm extremely excited for this film, the amazing soundtrack talent and as always, a memorable Telluride Film Festival.
The Dude abides.
