The Family Getaway - There's more to a ski vacation than just skiing

From Denver, CO on November 12, 2010

The Story

Aaaah, vacation! You finally escaped from work, got all the gear packed for yourself and the kids, and now you’re here. The relished family ski vacation and despite everyone’s busy schedules, you made it happen. So now that you’re in beautiful Telluride for eight whole days, what are you going to do with yourselves? Ski, of course, but that’s the obvious part. The kids will attend ski school; you and your honey will be able to hold hands through the fluffy Colorado powder (just kidding about the holding hands part); and you’ll have plenty of family ski time. Maybe you’ll even take a lesson together (perhaps in snow-biking if you’ve always been curious about the ski-cycling connection), or challenge each other the NASTAR course. But skiing and snowboarding (and snow-biking) are just the main course here in Telluride, and what’s a meal without apps, drinks and dessert? There are lots of other fun things to do while in town. If you decide to take a break from the slopes, there’s always ice skating in both Telluride and Mountain Village, and the Topaten Nordic and Snowshoe Area offers guided snowshoe tours from the top of Lift #10. Then, after hammering your body in the great outdoors, it’s nice to come in for a soak, swim, or a full-on pampering session. The Peaks Resort offers a day rate to its spa, which features a couple of pools, workout facilities, hot tubs, saunas. Plus, if you or your spouse schedules a service (facial, massage, pedicure…you get the idea), spa usage for the day is included. Another indoor alternative are afternoon matinees featured at the Palm Theater all winter long. Films air Friday afternoons at 3:30, all are kid-friendly, and only cost a buck (hard to turn that down). After the flick, the kids will undoubtedly want to go out for a bite. That’s where the Sweet Life comes in. A wall of candy and about a dozen ice cream flavors, combined with burgers, fries, hot dogs, onion rings…it’s a one-stop shop for gluttons all ages. Lastly, for that special evening…your last night in town is always a good one…a Sleigh Ride Dinner marks the perfect ending to a perfect vacation. Guests are met by a snow-cat-drawn-sleigh at the base of Lift 4 and shuttled up to the historic Gorrono Ranch for a western-style buffet dinner and spectacular evening under the stars. Wow, is the week over already? How come the family ski vacation only happens once a year?
