The Story
It all started with a chilled pomegranate Mojito and spicy Sundance roll; then some rich and savory French onion soup, followed by an excellent Hearts of Romaine salad with white anchovy beignets. For the entrée, a mouth-watering certified Angus beef filet with sour cream mashers and a wild mushroom sauce paired with a glass of bold Argentine Malbec. And finally, for dessert—if you can imagine there’s still room—a decadent crème brûlée with a crisp glass of Sauterne.
Although intense hunger is certainly required, this could possibly be my all-time favorite meal. So where, might you wonder, is the restaurant that serves such a fine (and diverse) spread? Well, in truth, this figment of my imagination is actually a combo platter from some of Telluride’s finest menus…a piece-meal, if you may.
For being so small in size, Telluride is tremendous as far as sophistication and variety when it comes to its restaurants. In fact, it’s quite metropolitan, with an array of fine dining options ranging from Asian to French to Italian, Eclectic American to All-American. Specifically (as mentioned above), Honga’s Lotus Petal does a superb job at the tropical cocktails and sushi; the Chop House makes a mean French onion soup; 221 South Oak has one of the best Caesar salads I’ve ever tasted (and I’ve sampled many); the Cosmopolitan serves up an utterly delicious steak; and in case you didn’t already feel like an indulgent glutton, you’ve never had crème brûlée like the one at La Marmotte.
While I’ve had unbelievable and memorable meals at just about all of town’s restaurants…for birthdays, anniversaries, friend’s birthdays, girl’s nights, date nights, holidays, just a regular old Wednesday in March…I’ve always thought it would be fun to embark on a dining progressive in town. And now having done the proverbial jaunt, I’m really motivated to go out and do it for real. Telluride is the perfect setting for such an eating adventure, because aside from having so many good spots to choose from, everything is within such close proximity that visiting three-to-five establishments in an evening is totally doable. Plus, having to commute between courses, you’ll be able to work off a few of the calories that you’re putting in…helpful, especially if you’re sporting the new skinny jeans you scored for Christmas.
