Jeeping

Located in the rugged San Juan Mountains, Telluride is the perfect staging area for your summer 4-wheeling adventure! Several companies offer a variety of 4-wheel drive tours over the mountain passes that surround the box canyon, and for more daring souls, Jeep rentals are also available or bring your own. Start your day with a mild trip over Ophir pass to Silverton or take in the amazing views from Imogene Pass past the historic Tomboy Mine to Ouray. From either town you can access the Alpine Loop which connects Ouray, Silverton and Lake City with a series of hair-raising mountain passes. Experienced Jeepers can save the best for last and return to Telluride by Black Bear Pass, arguably the most challenging 4-wheeling in the Southwest. Jeeping season begins around Memorial Day and continues until late October. Don’t forget that these passes can get snow almost any time of year, so call ahead for road conditions and be prepared for a variety of weather throughout your trip.
