Heli Skiing
The
San Juan Mountains of Telluride
offer the highest heli-ski terrain in North America. Excellent and
challenging terrain (though you don't have to be an expert to
heli-ski), mostly above treeline, is found in and around Telluride
from December through April. April offers the most stable snowpack of
the season, and is the best time for access to the highest
peaks.
Helitrax guides groups of at least four skiers at a time up the mountains.

A typical day of heli-skiing consists of about six runs set at a leisurely, yet stable pace. The terrain consists of thousands of feet untracked powder on an uncompacted base (something unheard of at resorts) set in a truly magnificent setting. It is possible to start a run above 13,000 feet and drop as much as 4,000 feet.
What to bring: Fat skis. Otherwise, dress as you would for resort skiing. Don't forget the camera - the guides are happy to take your picture. During your next Telluride ski vacation don't miss out on the powder accessible by heli-skiing.
