USA Pro Cycling Challenge - August 20, 2012
An exciting event is coming to Telluride, Colorado next summer. The 2nd annual USA Pro Cycling Challenge will be rolling through Telluride in August, 2012. The first stage starts on August 20, with cyclists going from Durango and ending in Telluride, 111 miles away.
Last year, nearly 1 million spectators viewed this race along the route as over 100 of the world’s top athletes raced through the Rockies. Spectators saw Olympians, World Champions and the Tour de France podium winners compete. In the end, Levi Leipheimer of Team RadioShack was recognized as the first-ever champion of this new annual race.
The race spans 7 days and will cover roughly 520 miles, which includes 5 mountain passes over 10,000 feet in elevation. The first such pass will be encountered at the 10,222 foot Lizard Head Pass on the way to Telluride. As usual, Telluride's summer calendar is packed with activities including the 32nd annual Mushroom Fest held the weekend prior to race day, and the 38th annual Telluride Film Festival held a little over a week after race day.
It is highly likely that rooms will sell-out in Telluride and Mountain Village during this time. It is expected that racers, their families and support crews, race officials, and media will occupy as much as 1/3 of the available rooms.
