Silver Lake - Telluride Hiking

This trail, part of Bridal Veil Basin, is a two hour hike that brings you to one of the more spectacular spots in the San Juans. Silver Lake is likely the closest lake to hike to from Telluride, but getting there is no cake walk. Though the lake is a short 1.6 miles from the Bridal Veil power plant, the elevation gain is about 1,700 feet and, as you might guess, this hike will be quite steep at parts. However, the end result is beyond rewarding. You’ll be happy you got a great work out in as well as the opportunity to experience a pristine alpine lake that sits at 11,778 feet.

The hike will not take long and is usually done in two hours, but don’t forget to pack a lunch with you (and plenty of water) to enjoy the views at the lake. To get there, walk about ten minutes past the Bridal Veil power plant to the creek crossing for Silver Lake.

You’ll have to do some pebble hopping to cross the creek, so note that if you keep your shoes on they might get wet. After crossing the creek, the trail swings to the left and then, at the fork, continues to the right. Follow signs to the right for Silver Creek and you will find yourself quickly climbing in elevation.

It can be a bit strenuous at this part so remember to take your time and enjoy! You’ll be able to look across Bridal Veil Canyon into Gray’s Basin. After about 1,000 feet in elevation gain, you will reach a beautiful alpine meadow to cross through. The lake is near! There is a tunnel to the right that goes under the lake, and another 100 feet climb will get you to the water. Sit back, relax, enjoy, and don’t be afraid to explore. Fishing is also popular here, so bring your rod if you have the time. Round trip, the hike will take about four hours.
