Jud Wiebe Trail - Telluride Hiking
The Jud Wiebe trail is a favorite short hike here in Telluride. It takes about two hours to complete and is accessible right from town, making for a perfect way to get out for just part of the day. The trail is a three mile long loop that begins on one end at the top of North Aspen Street (the same spot as the Cornet Falls hike) and brings you out at the top of North Oak Street. You can choose which side you want to start from, either way being a fine option.
The elevation gain on this hike is about 1,300 feet. If starting from the north end of Aspen Street, cross over the bridge on your left and follow the dirt path up (the trail begins in the eastward direction and eventually turns westward). The trail will be a steady and gradual incline up through beautiful aspen groves.
You will reach an intersection with other trails, so be sure to hang a right up a switchback instead of following the dirt straight. Here, you will see a sign for Jud Wiebe trail (it wouldn’t hurt to bring a map!)
You will find a few more switchbacks at this point in the hike, eventually leading to a great look out spot with vast views of the San Juans and the town of Telluride.
Continue on and the path will lead you along a ridge through a beautiful meadow. After this, you’ll start to gradually descend again through aspen groves, eventually coming to a small creek that you will pass over. If you choose to start the hike from the Oak Street entrance, walk up Tomboy Road and take your first left through a gate where you will continue on a gravel path and follow the hike in reverse.
