Vienna Boys Choir

From: Mar 27, 2010
To: Mar 27, 2010

The world’s most beloved choir has been thrilling audiences young and old for over 500 years.  Their eagerly anticipated tours play to sell out crowds nationwide and their reputation as consummate performers is well deserved.

The choir’s repertoire includes everything from medieval to contemporary and experimental music. Motets and lieder for boys’ choir form the core of the touring repertoire, as do the choir’s own arrangements of waltzes and polkas by Strauss.

The Vienna Boys Choir ensemble is generally considered to have been founded in 1498, when Emperor Maximilian I, having set up court in Vienna, included a roster of boy choristers among his palace musicians.  For centuries the choir thrived. Among the Choir’s illustrious graduates are Schubert and the conductors Hans Richter and Clemens Krauss.

Today, the Vienna Boys Choir is an impressive operation that runs its own school for 250 youngsters, all of whom receive a thorough musical and general education.  From this student body, which includes girls, the most talented boys are chosen for the prestigious touring choir.  Today there are around 100 choristers between the ages of ten and fourteen, divided into four touring choirs. The four choirs give around 300 concerts and performances each year in front of almost half a million people. They visit virtually all European countries, and they are frequent guests in Asia, Australia and the Americas.

Don’t miss the chance to see these amazing performers at The Palm!
