Anders Osborne to play Halloween Bash

Posted on October 5, 2012 by Hart
Anders loves Telluride. He's pretty much a local. After ripping one of the best Halloween shows I've been to in a long time in 2011 AND fresh off his rockin' performance on Town Park stage at the 19th annual Telluride Blues & Brews Festival... Anders Osborne is back. The 37th annual KOTO Halloween Bash will take place Friday, October 26th at the Telluride Conference Center with our good ol' NOLA friend. This is sure to be another huge party. Last year, he and Karl Denson put on a hellova performance in Hanley Pavilion down in Town Park. So, get your Yeti outfit, your Honey Boo Boo outfit, your politician attire or fired Big Bird outfit and come to the Halloween Bash this year in Telluride. You won't regret it.

For more info and tickets, visit KOTO Radio. We're offering discounted lodging for the bash! Call us at 877-507-9695 for the local hookup.

A Hike to Silver Lake

Posted on October 3, 2012 by Maggie
Summer was not ready to let go of Telluride yesterday, with cloudless skies and temperatures in the mid to upper sixties. It was a perfect day for a hike up to Silver Lake. Located above Bridal Veil Falls, Silver Lake is one of Telluride's most beautiful destinations. This glassy lake is loaded with large trout and home to icy temperatures and spectacular views. The trail starts off pretty steap, but levels off towards the top. It took us about 1-1.5hrs to get to the lake and 45 minutes to hike down. If altitude is not your friend, this hike may not be for you, but the climb is not too long and definitely do-able. This hike is less traveled than some other trails in town and hands-down my favorite in Telluride!

The Peak is Here!

Posted on October 1, 2012 by Maggie
The fall colors are spectacular here in Telluride! Though the peaks are capped with snow, the slopes of Telluride's box canyon are laiden with brilliant yellow, orange, and red hues descending into town. Now is the time for a hike to Silver Lake, a casual mountain bike ride on Jurassic Trail, a jog up the Jud Weibe, or just a ride to the top of the gondola. Come enjoy the best fall foliage Telluride has seen in almost a decade!

Via Ferrata

Hiking the Via Ferrata in Telluride, CO...

Even though some of its sections resemble a hiking trail more than a rock climb, make no mistake, this climbing route requires technical abilities and gear. An accident of this route could easily have fatal consequences. Once you find its start, the route is easy to follow.

Telluride’s VF is unique in that it traverses horizontally rather than climbing vertically. This creates its own set of potential hazards, such as increasing the chance of your self belay attachment being severed in a horizontal swinging fall, or of not being able to regain the route if you have fallen below it.
The start is located past Bridal Veil Falls above Pipeline Wall. Once on the Krogerata just follow the trail, which at the end of the cables gradually descends to the road leading to town. Telluride Mountain Club suggests to retrace your way back to avoid crossing private property, which is located on the descent towards Telluride.

Falt Tilt 2012

Posted on September 27, 2012 by Maggie

Fall Tilt returns to the Mountain Village Bike Park with a $5,000 cash purse!

The month of October marks the time of year when the leaves turn and the mountain air grows cooler. It also means the end of a busy bike season in the San Juans. For those who want to squeeze in one last event before the snow falls, Mountain Village has your number. The fourth annual Fall Tilt in Telluride returns October 5 and October 6 with a cash purse totaling $5,000.

“Every year the caliber of riders that come out and celebrate with Mountain Village is impressive,” said Mountain Village Community Relations Manager Nichole Zangara. “The town is invested in mountain biking and we look for every opportunity possible to share our passion for the sport with other like-minded riders.”

As far as the race goes, it works like this: The race is capped at 40 on-course riders, which translates to over 60 competitors on race day. There will be mandatory meeting Friday night and race day is Saturday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Prior to the start of the race, each rider must complete at least one course inspection, and riders will utilize the gondola both days. The winners of each class and category are determined by the total number of laps completed in a 12-hour period. There are no ties. CJ Sports Timing will time every lap of every rider to determine the winners just in case there is a tie in the number of laps. Riding after dark will require the use of approved front-mounted bike lights. If a rider intends to run the last hours of the race and doesn’t have an adequate lighting system, they won’t be allowed on the course.

Currently, Fall Tilt registration is available online at BikeReg.com, and it will end Friday, October 5 at 5 p.m. Participation fees range from $75 to $180, and include event registration, race plate, on-site hospitality, and event after-party. Classes and categories include open and amateur solo, duo and trio teams. Team class is based on best-rider-on-team skill level and only one rider per duo and trio team is allowed on the course at any given time. As for that pretty cash purse, the amount is set at $5,000, and cash will be paid to top finishers – first, second and third – in the open class and for all categories. And last, but not least, at the awards ceremony every rider will have the opportunity to win a killer swag, compliments of the event’s sponsors.

 -more-

The Fall Tilt race course, all within the Mountain Village Bike Park, is comprised of five adjacent downhill trails that will be utilized simultaneously from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. It is up to the rider’s discretion as to which trail they will use for each downhill lap.

"Riders can expect some new trails like Gold Rush, which will be a fun addition and help keep 12 hours of riding from getting too repetitive,” said Race Director Jon Tracy. “With the World Cup Trail being one of the faster courses in the park, if you want to be a top finisher you will want to ride this trail. Last year the top finishers completed 76 laps. That translated to 228 big jumps in the course of a day … pretty incredible.”

To keep the course safe for riders and spectators, the race course will be taped and marked, closed to the general public, and patrolled and marshaled. Tech support tents and support staff will be available near the vicinity of the finish line; riders are responsible for their own repair and equipment replacement.

For more information regarding the race, schedule, registration and lodging, please check out the details at www.falltiltintelluride.com. Elevation Vacations and The Peaks Resort & Spa are offering Fall Tilt-only discounted lodging packages. To volunteer as a course marshal on Saturday, October 1, contact Recreational Specialist Jon Tracy at jtracy@mtnvillage.org. Each volunteer will receive lunch and the chance to win raffle prizes totaling more than $1,000.

And last, but certainly key players in the success of Fall Tilt, are the event sponsors. A special thanks to: Town of Mountain Village, Mountain Village Bike Park, Telluride Mountain Village Owners Association, BootDoctors & Paragon Sports, Dakine, Telluride Gravity Works, San Miguel Bike Alliance, Hotel Madeline Telluride, Smak Bar, The Market at Mountain Village, Wells Fargo, Hotel Columbia and New Sheridan Hotel.

It was raining here in town, but boy, was it snowing up on the peaks! Winter is no longer just a far-off nostalgic memory from last season's epic runs or past years' powder stashes; winter has made its first appearance in Telluride! The clouds cleared just enough on Monday to catch a glimpse of the dusting on Ajax:

And the sun peeked out briefly on Tuesday so that we could really get a good look at the aspens against the snowy backdrop:

An Afternoon Up Bear Creek

Posted on September 19, 2012 by Maggie
Yesterday afternoon Sophie and I ran up Bear Creek Trail to get some exercise and a glimpse of the fall colors as the leaves begin to change. Sophie and I (both originally from the east coast) couldn't stop thinking of the foliage back home. When we moved to Colorado 4 years ago, Eastcoasters warned us that we would no longer have a fall with blossoming color. It's true that we don't rake leaves twice a day here in Telluride, but the colors remain as brilliant as one could hope for. If you want to go check out Bear Creek Trail for yourself head to the end of South Pine Street and follow the trail about 2.5 miles up to the base of Bear Creek Falls. If you are looking for a mild climb with spectacular views this is a great hike!

The Dawning of a New Season

19th Annual Blues & Brews: A Success!

Posted on September 17, 2012 by Maggie
Another beautiful Blues & Brews has come and gone, but what a weekend it was! Day three left nothing to be desired. The Lee Boys and Kelley Hunt kicked off the day in fine fashion with back to back soulful performances. And though many of this year’s performances were laiden with rock influences, Phil Wiggins and Rev. John Wilkins brought the jazzy blues of the South to Telluride Town Park. The pair looked relaxed on stage as they demonstarted exciting tone and technique and Rev. Wilkins spoke to the crowd as he paid homage to his father’s talent as a celebrated blues and gospel singer.

Tab Benoit provided an engaging and orignal performance and I was able to lie back on the grass and enjoy listening to these swampy blues. The Chris Robinson Brotherhood was one of my favorites of the day with their updated 70's look and sound. This performance was by no means short on talent.

And last but not least...It’s hard to believe that Phil Lesh is seventy-two years old when hear the complexities of his work on the electric bass. Lesh didn’t miss a beat last night, reminding everyone in the crowd of his legendary prowess and innovation that has continued to pull music into new ages. With the addition of Warren Haynes on guitar and vocals, the group showed off their instrumental talents with a harder, faster rock tone that made audience “Dead-heads” go wild.  One of the most brilliant aspects of this performance was its ability to speak to an intergenterational audience. As I stood listening to Lesh jam, I found myself surrounded by a thirty-something couple, a mother and daughter, a college student, and a sixty year old gentleman who had been to Blues & Brews every year for the past thirteen years . Needless to say, every member of the crowd was on their feet for this both classic and exploitory performance.

There's no denying that Telluride's 19th Annual Blues & Brews festival was a success! The headliners delivered and those less well known blew us away. I am still riding high on the excitement of these brilliant performances, tasty beers, and great company. Thanks for a fantastic weekend festivarians. Hope to see you all again for next year's festival!
