Telluride Film Festival

This Week In Telluride...

Posted on October 22, 2012 by Maggie
The Telluride Gondola will begin its shortened hours on Monday, October 22nd. Gondola will run between Telluride and Mountain Village 7am-10pm and will then close for the Fall Shoulder Season at midnight on October 28th.

On Thursday, October 25th, the Telluride Film Festival presents the critically-acclaimed ROBOT AND FRANK (2012) with Susan Sarandon, James Marsden, Liv Tyler and Peter Sarsgaard. One show only - 8:30pm at the Nugget Theater. 89 minutes. Rated PG-13. No Nugget Passes, please.

Abigail Washburn performs LIVE at the Sheridan Opera House along with musician Kai Welch on Thursday, October 25th at 8pm. This American old-time music singer and songwriter has proven herself to be a bracing revelation to the folk tradition. Abigail Washburn is an Illinois-born, Nashville-based clawhammer banjo player who is every bit as interested in the present and the future as she is in the past, and every bit as attuned to the global as she is to the local. She pairs venerable folk elements with far-flung sounds, and the results feel both strangely familiar and unlike anything anybody's ever heard before. To put it another way, she changes what seems possible.
We had the opportunity to speak with Abigail the other day about Telluride Bluegrass Festival, playing with Mumford and Sons, and her upcoming show at the historic Sheridan Opera House. Read the full interview, here.

Telluride Cribagge Night (ongoing) at the Steaming Bean. Welcoming all skill levels, beginners and experts alike. Bring a board and cards if you have them. If not, just bring yourself! 7:30pm onwards.

Friday, October 26th marks Telluride's 37th Annual KOTO Halloween Bash! This is one of our favorite Telluride events and we promise you won't want to miss it. Anders Osborne will be performing LIVE with special guest KI-'NE-TEK at the Telluride Conference Center. Doors open at 8pm with show at 9pm. Tickets are on sale ($30 in advance, $35 day of). Come listen to great music and sport your best costumes (Did I mention there will be a costume contest with cash prizes??). For more info, check out www.koto.org. Happy Halloween!

Telluride Film Festival Recap

Posted on September 6, 2011 by Hart

Now that the 2011 Telluride Film Festival has concluded – this year’s eclectic mix of films continues to prove why the Telluride Film Festival is different from so many other film festivals.

Having George Clooney and Tilda Swinton in attendance as silver medallion tributes didn’t hurt the celebrity “wattage”.  However, not having to attend red carpet events, being able to mix with the locals and attendees without worrying about “who they were wearing” and basically enjoying the low key vibe that is Telluride was refreshing.  Add Glenn Close and Jennifer Garner to the list of celebrities also in town and it made for another enthusiastic event.

Telluride Film Festival has always been and remains – simply about the love of films.  With that as a narrative, Telluride has always selected films that may not necessarily appeal to those people looking for the next box office blockbuster.  The goal being – find those films that embody the core essence of what films are meant to do - provoke, entertain, disturb, amuse, etc.  Some of the films premiered in Telluride have been commercial successes and probably many more have not been – but those less commercial films are no less embraced and enjoyed by the festival crowd.  In fact, standing in line listening to what people enjoyed most are often small, mindful films that you need to seek out afterwards from art house rental companies or art house movie theaters.

This year’s menu of films was no exception.  Some examples include “The Descendants”, starring George Clooney and directed by Alexander Payne - a film more inclined to be commercially successful.  Then there’s “The Artist” – a silent film shot in black and white…beautifully acted and highly entertaining but certainly a commercial crap shoot given it’s format.  Glenn Close delivered another brilliant performance in “Albert Nobbs” – a period piece both comic and heartbreaking but again, how will it do commercially?  Those films are a small slice of what was offered this year – many more films  delivering the kind of experience the Telluride Film Festival devotees have come to respect and rely on…all the while, comfortably in their jeans!

Top 5 Best Things to do in Telluride this Labor Day Weekend, 8/31-9/5

Wednesday, August 31st - Abel Gance Open Air Cinema presents: “Never Cry Wolf”– The Abel Gance Open Air Cinema in Elks Park are always some of the most memorable films you’ll see at this year’s 38th Annual Telluride Film Festival. I have fond memories of sitting in the pouring rain with hundreds of other people watching Sean Penn’s “Into the Wild” or hearing hundreds of people scream simultaneously out loud during Oren Peli’s “Paranormal Activity” or watching “The King’s Speech” for the 3rd time because it’s just THAT good. There’s just something unique and real about bring a sleeping bag, a bottle of wine and watching these films in the cool, dark, starry Telluride night. Wednesday night the Abel Gance Open Air Cinema kicks of the TFF with the first FREE film of the Labor Day Weekend, “Never Cry Wolf” at 8:30pm. Thursday night at the Abel Gance, “Michael Clayton” will play at 8:30pm. Remember to bring a rain jacket, tarp, blankets and a sleeping bag! Oh yea, and some hot whiskey cider. Check these films out!

Thursday, September 1st - Telluride Arts Presents: Telluride Art Walk and Kids Walk – The First Thursday Art Walk is a celebration of the arts in Downtown Telluride every 1st Thursday of the month.  Friday, September 2nd – Monday, September 5th - Telluride Film Festival – Each Labor Day Weekend, the tiny town of Telluride, Colorado triples in numbers… swells of passionate film enthusiasts flood the town for four days of total cinematic immersion, embarking on a viewing odyssey, blissfully spending entire days in flickering dark rooms. Need we say more? WELCOME TO THE SHOW! If you don’t have tickets, don’t fret. There are FREE shows at the Wilkenson Public Library and at the Abel Gance Outdoor Cinema in Elks Park. Maybe you'll end up sitting next to George Clooney at one of the shows... Friday, September 2nd – Telluride Farmers Market – Check out local vendors bringing the highest quality, regional food (all within 100 miles) to South Oak Street every Friday afternoon during the Summer. Enjoy bread, flowers, pottery, popcorn, vegetables, jewelry, live music and more from 11:00am-4:00pm. You've got to get some of the kettle popcorn... divine. For a list of vendors, click here: http://www.thetelluridefarmersmarket.com/content/7194

All Labor Day Weekend – Get Outside! – Make sure you take the time in between films to get outside and explore some of the amazing hikes right in our backyard. Bear Creek Falls is a nice beginner-intermediate hike (5 miles round trip) starting on South Pine Street. The Jud Wiebe is a great quick hike you can do in between films, shorter but a little steeper, starting on North Aspen Street (2.5 miles). You can hike up to the views of Town and then hike down instead of doing the entire trail… takes 1-1.5 hours. Make sure you visit Colorado’s largest free-falling waterfall at the end of the valley, Bridal Veil Falls. If you have a vehicle, pack a lunch & a fly rod and check out Alta Lakes (about 15-20 minutes outside of Telluride). It’s simply stunning. Whatever you do… make sure you get outside and enjoy Telluride’s pure beauty while the Summer's still here!

Telluride Film Festival... unlike any other Film Festival in the World.

Posted on August 30, 2011 by Hart

Traditionally, Labor Day is celebrated by most Americans as the symbolic end of the summer vacation season. For some, it’s the last time to visit the beach for the year, or the last time to wear that favorite white, linen shirt hanging in the closet, or maybe it’s the last time you enjoy a nice picnic or barbecue with friends and family. Here in Telluride, Labor Day weekend is celebrated as a beginning. A commencement to a heated race of reviews, critiques, festivals and silver screen gazing… all hoping for as many miniature golden statues as possible five months later at the Academy Awards. “We take great pains to remain not a competition, but a celebration of the best in film – past, present and future – from all around the world. This is the one weekend immersed in an unabashed carnival of film: viewing, breathing, eating, and talking cinema. This is The SHOW”.

“…like Cannes died and went to heaven…” – Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

So, what makes Telluride Film Festival (TFF) unique and different than all the others – Sundance, Cannes, Venice, Toronto and more? First and most importantly, TFF is WAY more laid back. You won’t find any red carpets, TMZ, paparazzi, flashing cameras, stretch Hummer’s, champagne and other Hollywood-esk moments (thank God)... all the glamour and glitz is left behind when you arrive in our box canyon. You might even randomly sit beside Sean Penn at the Sheridan Bar having a beer (true story) or even get behind Laura Linney at the Clark’s Market checkout line (she’s pretty much a local) or stroll by Colin Firth on Main Street and exchange hello’s (another true story). Instead of black-tie, invite only events… TFF offers free Q&A’s in Elks Park where you can bring a blanket, lunch and enjoy the views of the surrounding 13,000 foot peaks. Relaxed, unhurried, casual, free from stress is something the film industry doesn’t embrace (for many reasons)… and that’s what makes Telluride so much more memorable.

“The town’s theatres are filled with the famous, the infamous, and the anonymous, seated side by side in a joyful camaraderie of discovery” – Steven G. Kellman, San Antonio Light

Second, TFF is about one thing - the love of film. A TRUE film festival where the films, not celebrities, are celebrated. The entire program is even a secret all the way up until hours before the festival starts. TFF calls their films “sneak peaks” and not “premieres” - the emphasis is on the movies and their creative teams, not on the announcement. Little things like this make the Labor Day Festival so special here in Telluride. With this charm and laidback attitude, it’s no wonder TFF has “sneak peaked” The King’s Speech, Black Swan, Slumdog Millionaire, The Lives of Others, Juno, Brokeback Mountain and many, many more fantastic films in recent years. Maybe it’s something in the air? Whatever it is… we look forward to another amazing and laidback Labor Day weekend here in Telluride. Welcome to The SHOW!

“The Telluride Festival is for those who have a passion for the cinema, those who live for the cinema, those who live for the cinema, rather than those who live on the cinema” – Bertrand Tavernier

Top 5 Best Things to do in Telluride this Spring, 3/23-4/3

Posted on March 23, 2011 by Hart
Spring is here. The winter ski season is winding down... still good skiing & hiking to be had and still time to prefect your goggle tan. Get it while you can! Here are the Top 5 Best Things to do in Telluride the remaining 11 days of the ski season, 3/23-4/3:

Wednesday the 23rd & Thursday the 24th - 127 Hours - The Telluride Film Festival presents a special two-night performance of Danny Boyle's, 127 Hours. I was lucky enough to see the World premier this past September during the Telluride Film Festival when Danny Boyle, James Franco, and Aron Ralston were in town... and boy was it intense. I was gripping my armrests for 2 hours straight. Most know the story, but its follows a young mountain climber who becomes trapped under a boulder while canyoneering in Moab, Utah (only 2 hours from Telluride) and resorts to desperate measures in order to survive. Wednesday night's show is at 5:30pm and Thursday's is at 8:00pm, both showing at the Nugget. If you haven't seen this movie yet... it lives up to the hype and is very entertaining, go see it.

Thursday the 24th - Historic Pub Crawl - The Telluride Historical Museum presents the last "Historic Pub Crawl" of the winter ski season. Beth Roberts does a great job explaining Telluride's history all while exploring some of town's historic watering holes. Reserve your spot today because it will sell out! Call the Museum at: 970-728-3344, ext 2. Discover our colorful past and cheers to history! Check out a video of the Historic Pub Crawl from The Telluride Newb at the bottom of this blog.

3/23-4/2 - Live music at The Llama - The Llama has seriously stepped it up this winter on the late night scene. Rarely do you walk by and there's not someone jamming out on stage (big thanks to Kathleen, Tom and Kyle!) Lots of more music the next two weeks: 3/23 - Acoustifunk, 3/24 - Vinyl Meningitis, 3/25 - Zobomaze, 3/26 - DJ Logic, 3/27 - Fort Knox Five, 3/30 - Lily von Shtupp, 4/1 - Cedric Burnside & Lightning Malcom, 4/2 - Rowdy Shadehouse Funk Band. Also, have you been to The Llama for Happy Hour? It's awesome. 3:00pm - 6:00pm: $2.50 tacos, $6 Burgers & Rolls, and cheap drinks. Check it out.

Saturday the 26th - For the Love of All Animals Disco Ball - The Sheridan Opera House turns into a disco dance hall on Saturday night all while benefitting 3 local animal shelters. Dress up in your best disco outfits to win dinner for two at the Cosmopolitan or just come as yourself and support this great cause. There will also be an auction featuring flat screen tv's, cruiser bikes, and more, all benefitting the Telluride Animal Foundation. Additionally, there will be an adoption day in front of the Opera House all day Saturday... stop by and pet some fluffy puppies and kittens or even take one home. For more information, visit: http://tellurideanimalfoundation.org

Friday, April 1st - KOTO Street Dance Celebration - Come party down on Main Street for the end of the season Street Dance and Pink Flamingo Party. The local radio station, KOTO, will put on a couple free concerts (Ralph Dinosaur and The Great Funktier) on Main Street with New Belgium beer, and a costume contest judged by KOTO. Come celebrate the end of a terrific ski season!

The Telluride Ski Resort will close on Sunday, April 3rd. Thanks to everyone for a great season and we look forward to having you in town this summer for a festival or next winter for some more pow!
