Spring Hike up Bear Creek

Posted on May 12, 2013 by mark
It’s time to put on that old pair of hiking shoes or break in a new pair.  Though hiking options in Telluride are a bit limited in May, the low elevation hikes (relatively speaking) are generally passable and provide some beautiful views.

Last weekend, I hiked the Owl Creek Trail as my first hike of the season.  Located just east of the Jud Wiebe Trail, Owl Creek is a comfortable 2 hour loop with a southern exposure.  At most, there’s 100 yards of snow to navigate through.  The rest of the trail is open and reasonably dry.  The length and elevation are similar to Jud Wiebe, but I prefer fewer people on the trail.

This weekend, I wanted to see how far I could get up the Bear Creek Trail before getting snowed out.  The good news is that you can get all the way to the falls.  However, the last 10% of the trail is totally snow covered.  Otherwise, there are intermittent snow patches throughout the hike.  Hiking poles and good hiking shoes are definitely helpful on the slippery spots.

Starting the hike shortly after 8am meant that the sun hadn’t reached the trail yet, and the temperature was just above freezing.  However, the stocking hat and gloves were put away within the 1st hour.  On my way back, the coat was stripped off and I was down to a tee shirt.  The nice thing about starting early is that the ground is frozen rather than muddy, and the snow is solid.  Coming back, I sunk in the snow and tried to navigate around the mud.

While there are signs of spring, there’s not much green vegetation around in early May.  I thought this would diminish the picture taking opportunities, but in the end, I shot far more pictures than I expected.  The combination of snow, ice, and running water made for some awesome shots.

Before heading back to Telluride, I started up the Wasatch Trail.  Unfortunately, the trail is snowed out just 15 minutes up from the trailhead.  My guess it will be another couple weeks before the Wasatch Is open enough to get above the Bear Creek falls.   In the meantime, I’ve heard that the Keystone Gorge Trail is gorgeous, and I’m guessing that Tomboy Road will be clear for a couple of miles.

And we're... BACK! After a short hiatus that we all call "off-season" (it's a love/hate relationship), we're back in full-swing to bring you the best things to do in Telluride while you're on vacation or busy being a local. Can you believe it's May 18th??! Oh, and by the way, can you believe it's still SNOWING??! Crazyness... but we have a lot of events coming up soon to keep our minds off the big, fat, wet, snowflakes falling outside of our office window currently...
Buckle up... because it's going to be another WILD and exciting Summer! Here are a few events happening around town this weekend before our festival season kicks off next week with Mountainfilm!

Thursday, May 19th - ALASH, Tuvan Throat Singers in concert - The Sheridan Opera House will kick off its summer concert schedule with a very unique singing experience. Alash will perform its complex harmonies and western instruments while singing from their human "bagpipe-like" throats - Throat singing is a remarkable technique for singing multiple pitches at the same time. Saturday, May 21st - Rock and Roll Academy Spring Concert - Telluride's Rock and Roll Academy presents its annual Spring concert at the Sheridan Opera House. Watch local bands of all ages sing your favorite pop songs. I went to the Winter concert and was blown away. These kids are actually really, really, talented and rocked out! This is a great family event - 7:00pm - 10:00pm.

Saturday and Sunday, May 20th & 21st - Regional Spring Clean-up Days - Shout out to Locals... the Spring clean-up Days is a community-wide intitiative to help get rid of unwanted household objects in a clean and environmental-friendly way. Household trash, recycling, composting materials, hazardous waste and more can be taken to the Telluride High School Parking lot for safe disposal. Top 5 Best Things to do in Telluride this Spring, 3/23-4/3

Posted on March 23, 2011 by Hart
Spring is here. The winter ski season is winding down... still good skiing & hiking to be had and still time to prefect your goggle tan. Get it while you can! Here are the Top 5 Best Things to do in Telluride the remaining 11 days of the ski season, 3/23-4/3:

Wednesday the 23rd & Thursday the 24th - 127 Hours - The Telluride Film Festival presents a special two-night performance of Danny Boyle's, 127 Hours. I was lucky enough to see the World premier this past September during the Telluride Film Festival when Danny Boyle, James Franco, and Aron Ralston were in town... and boy was it intense. I was gripping my armrests for 2 hours straight. Most know the story, but its follows a young mountain climber who becomes trapped under a boulder while canyoneering in Moab, Utah (only 2 hours from Telluride) and resorts to desperate measures in order to survive. Wednesday night's show is at 5:30pm and Thursday's is at 8:00pm, both showing at the Nugget. If you haven't seen this movie yet... it lives up to the hype and is very entertaining, go see it.

Thursday the 24th - Historic Pub Crawl - The Telluride Historical Museum presents the last "Historic Pub Crawl" of the winter ski season. Beth Roberts does a great job explaining Telluride's history all while exploring some of town's historic watering holes. Reserve your spot today because it will sell out! Call the Museum at: 970-728-3344, ext 2. Discover our colorful past and cheers to history! Check out a video of the Historic Pub Crawl from The Telluride Newb at the bottom of this blog.

3/23-4/2 - Live music at The Llama - The Llama has seriously stepped it up this winter on the late night scene. Rarely do you walk by and there's not someone jamming out on stage (big thanks to Kathleen, Tom and Kyle!) Lots of more music the next two weeks: 3/23 - Acoustifunk, 3/24 - Vinyl Meningitis, 3/25 - Zobomaze, 3/26 - DJ Logic, 3/27 - Fort Knox Five, 3/30 - Lily von Shtupp, 4/1 - Cedric Burnside & Lightning Malcom, 4/2 - Rowdy Shadehouse Funk Band. Also, have you been to The Llama for Happy Hour? It's awesome. 3:00pm - 6:00pm: $2.50 tacos, $6 Burgers & Rolls, and cheap drinks. Check it out.

Saturday the 26th - For the Love of All Animals Disco Ball - The Sheridan Opera House turns into a disco dance hall on Saturday night all while benefitting 3 local animal shelters. Dress up in your best disco outfits to win dinner for two at the Cosmopolitan or just come as yourself and support this great cause. There will also be an auction featuring flat screen tv's, cruiser bikes, and more, all benefitting the Telluride Animal Foundation. Additionally, there will be an adoption day in front of the Opera House all day Saturday... stop by and pet some fluffy puppies and kittens or even take one home. For more information, visit: http://tellurideanimalfoundation.org

Friday, April 1st - KOTO Street Dance Celebration - Come party down on Main Street for the end of the season Street Dance and Pink Flamingo Party. The local radio station, KOTO, will put on a couple free concerts (Ralph Dinosaur and The Great Funktier) on Main Street with New Belgium beer, and a costume contest judged by KOTO. Come celebrate the end of a terrific ski season!

The Telluride Ski Resort will close on Sunday, April 3rd. Thanks to everyone for a great season and we look forward to having you in town this summer for a festival or next winter for some more pow!
