Spring Hike up Bear Creek

Posted on May 12, 2013 by mark
It’s time to put on that old pair of hiking shoes or break in a new pair.  Though hiking options in Telluride are a bit limited in May, the low elevation hikes (relatively speaking) are generally passable and provide some beautiful views.

Last weekend, I hiked the Owl Creek Trail as my first hike of the season.  Located just east of the Jud Wiebe Trail, Owl Creek is a comfortable 2 hour loop with a southern exposure.  At most, there’s 100 yards of snow to navigate through.  The rest of the trail is open and reasonably dry.  The length and elevation are similar to Jud Wiebe, but I prefer fewer people on the trail.

This weekend, I wanted to see how far I could get up the Bear Creek Trail before getting snowed out.  The good news is that you can get all the way to the falls.  However, the last 10% of the trail is totally snow covered.  Otherwise, there are intermittent snow patches throughout the hike.  Hiking poles and good hiking shoes are definitely helpful on the slippery spots.

Starting the hike shortly after 8am meant that the sun hadn’t reached the trail yet, and the temperature was just above freezing.  However, the stocking hat and gloves were put away within the 1st hour.  On my way back, the coat was stripped off and I was down to a tee shirt.  The nice thing about starting early is that the ground is frozen rather than muddy, and the snow is solid.  Coming back, I sunk in the snow and tried to navigate around the mud.

While there are signs of spring, there’s not much green vegetation around in early May.  I thought this would diminish the picture taking opportunities, but in the end, I shot far more pictures than I expected.  The combination of snow, ice, and running water made for some awesome shots.

Before heading back to Telluride, I started up the Wasatch Trail.  Unfortunately, the trail is snowed out just 15 minutes up from the trailhead.  My guess it will be another couple weeks before the Wasatch Is open enough to get above the Bear Creek falls.   In the meantime, I’ve heard that the Keystone Gorge Trail is gorgeous, and I’m guessing that Tomboy Road will be clear for a couple of miles.

Hiking the Jud Wiebe

Posted on September 10, 2012 by Sophie
Fall is here: the breeze is getting cooler and the aspens are unmistakably turning from green to their signature gold. And yet, Maggie and I couldn't help but catch a first little taste of ski stoke as we hiked the Jud Wiebe trail this past weekend. You could not have asked for a more perfect day for a hike. Now close your eyes, and picture some snow on those trails. Ski season is on its way!

This Week in Telluride

Posted on August 15, 2012 by katherine
Well, it may be hump day already but the week is just getting started! The sun is shining, the influx of festivarians (of all sorts) are starting to arrive, and it's looking like another beautiful weekend will grace us here in Telluride, Colorado. With only two weeks left of my summer in "never never land," I myself am trying to enjoy every ounce of this wonderful place!

So far this work week i've played with puppies on Main Street, had lunch by Chair 8 (while dreaming of ski season), gone for a run on the river trail, and saw a movie at the Nugget. This weekend I plan to watch and learn a little at the Mushroom Festival, hike Ajax peak, buy produce from the Farmer's Market, paruse the Festival of the Arts, and drink some Margs at the Buck. If i'm lucky, i'll convince someone to take me fly fishing. And how could I forget? USA Pro Cycling Challenge rolls thru on Monday. Packin' it all in folks, that's how we do it in Telluride!

Other events to check out this week:

Free Sunset Concert Series in Mountain Village (15th)
Batman The Dark Night at the Nugget (17th-23rd)
30th Annual Blizzard Sale at Telluride Sports (17th-20th)
Telluride Chamber Music Festival (now-19th)
KOTO Radio Garage Sale (18th)
Jewel at the Sheridan Opera House (18th and 19th)

Fall Foliage

Posted on July 25, 2012 by katherine

If you’ve ever walked through an aspen forest, consider yourself lucky. These tall, slender trees with white bark and delicate little leaves are only found in certain parts of Colorado, Telluride being one such area. Each year for only about two weeks, their leaves turn from a light green to a magnificent golden yellow. This year, the weather has been slightly askew and, though we are no meteorologists, we foresee that the forests surrounding Telluride will show their fall colors a few weeks early. That means that if you hope to see some gorgeous fall foliage in Telluride, be sure to come out and experience the beauty during the first couple weeks of September!

Top 5 for Fall Foliage

1.) Gondola The Telluride Free Gondola is the only one of its kind- transporting people from Telluride to Mountain Village every day in just 13 minutes. Not to mention, the ride gives you breathtaking views of town, the Box Canyon, the Wilsons, and the valley beyond. Perfect for an aerial view of the fall colors.

2.) Hiking There are several trailheads right here in town that will lead you through beautiful aspen groves, perfect for experiencing the wonder of their fall foliage. Take a short walk on the Jud Wiebe trail, or a full day hike on Sneffels Highline and you will not be disappointed. If you head out in the early morning or late afternoon, the light will be especially beautiful against their golden leaves.

3.) Mountain Biking Bring yourself and your bike up the Free Gondola to any of the many mountain biking trails that begin at the top of St. Sophia Station. One of our favorites is the Prospect Prail, a great 10 mile single track trail that brings you through the ski area and back down into Mountain Village. If you’re experienced and looking for a thrill, check out the Mountain Village Downhill Park, an expert rider’s playground.

4.) Golf and Disc Golf That’s right, free disk golf! There is a course in Mountain Village that begins just across from the Town Hall Plaza. If you are unfamiliar with this fantastic game, you basically just aim for the targets (metal baskets), with the goal landing the disc in the basket. The winner is the player with the fewest number of throws throughout the course. Simple! Grab a Frisbee and get out there, a perfect activity to do while the aspens are in full golden hue.The course is open from 7am till Sunset. If you aren’t so good with a Frisbee, look into the Telluride Golf Club, a fantastic 18 hole course with the most breathtaking views of the San Juan Mountains.

5.) Fly Fishing There are a handful of beautiful fishing spots right here in Telluride’s backyard. Get outside and breathe the crisp mountain air this September, you may even catch something! Check out our list of favorite fly fishing spots at nearby rivers and lakes.

Moab, Utah

Posted on July 23, 2012 by Hart
Less than 3 hours away, Moab, Utah is one of the best day-trips in the Telluride region. You can easily wake up in Telluride, drive West, hike some unbelievable "bucketlist" trails and be back in your comfy Colorado bed later that evening.

We ventured over to our neighboring town of Moab this weekend and hiked around the famous Dead Horse Point State Park. We've hiked Arches National Park and Canyonlands National Park... but never Dead Horse Point. It was one of the prettiest sites we'd ever seen! Unobstructed views for miles and miles. Next time you visit us here in Telluride, don't forget that you can make Telluride your "homebase" and travel to these amazing spots any given afternoon.
Here's the beautiful mesa view into Canyonlands from Dead Horse Point:

Ice Lake & Island Lake

Posted on July 18, 2012 by Hart

Our friend Bebe, from The River Club, hiked one of the prettiest hikes in Southwestern Colorado... maybe even in the entire state. Ice Lake and Island Lake are gorgeous high-alpine mountain lakes located near our neighboring town of Silverton. Here's a description on how to get to the lakes and check out the photos!!

When heading to Silverton over Red Mountain Pass, before you reach the town, there is a turn off for South Mineral Campground.Take this right and head down the road a little ways and you will see there is a parking lot off to the right, park here and the adventure begins. There is a clearly marked trailhead at this parking lot for Ice Lake. The hike to Ice Lake is a moderately steep climb of 3.2 miles to Ice Lake. Before reaching Ice Lake you will see a large lake to your left that is below tree line, Ice Lake is over the next ridge from this point. When you start climbing to the ridge take a moment to see the waterfall that falls diagonally through the rock face, this will be to the left of you.

If you feel adventurous and choose to go to Island Lake you continue on the path from Ice Lake that heads right and Island Lake is another 3/4 of a mile off the trail. Ice Lake is so clear and blue that you can see the fish swimming 20 feet below the surface, it really is one of the most magnificent lakes around. Island Lake is darker is color but has a very prominent island right in the center of it. Make sure to be prepared for hiking in this area, thunderstorms happen frequently and you are exposed at the lakes because they are above tree line.

Hike to Blue Lake

Posted on July 12, 2012 by katherine
It sure is blue at Blue Lake! This is a great hike that takes about 2 hours each way, with amazing wild flowers along the entire trail.

Navajo Lake

Posted on July 5, 2012 by katherine
Here are a few shots from my hike up to Navajo Lake the other day. It was a 5 mile out and 5 mile back trip that started off as a gradual uphill walk through meadows until we hit some steeper switchbacks. Wildflowers were everywhere, and the views at the lake were AMAZING! Check out our Hiking page for more ideas on where to get up and go!
