Posted on November 13, 2012 by Hart

It's beginning to feel a lot like ski season around town. After a short and sweet off-season, things are picking up here in Telluride. With the ski resort set to open on Thanksgiving Day - Thursday, November 22nd - films, concerts and events are gearing up all over town to help get this party started. Here are the Top 5 Best Things to do in (and around) Telluride this Week:

Thursday, November 15thTeton Gravity Research Presents “Further” and “The Dream Factory” – Just as the temperatures drop and snow falls on the peaks, Teton Gravity Research and the Sheridan Arts Foundation presents a double feature with its newest films “Further” and “The Dream Factory” on Thursday, Nov. 15. “Further” screens at 6 p.m. and “The Dream Factory” screens at 8 p.m. “Further” is the second installment in the Jeremy Jones snowboard movie trilogy, Deeper, Further, Higher, presented by O’Neil. Further explores some of the world’s most remote mountain terrain while continuing Jones’ mission to camp deep in the backcountry and on the summits of unridden lines in such far-flung locales as Japan, Norway, Austria, Alaska and California. “Dream Factory” features TGR’s team delving deep into the Alaskan way of life, finding the best snow on earth and skiing the terrain that most of us only dream about. Tickets are $14 per movie and $24 for both, purchase them at Sheridanoperahouse.com

Friday, November 16thNappy Roots concert – “Awnaw! Hell naw! Man. Y’all done up and done it”! That’s right… Nappy Roots will bring their southern rap rhythms to Honga’s Roma Bar this Friday night. Tickets are $25 and are very limited… so, swing by Honga’s anytime this week, after 5:30pm, to pick your ticket up. Hopefully this is just the beginning of the historic Roma Bar’s comeback!

Friday, November 16thGondola Reopens for Winter – the prettiest (and freest) transportation system in the world reopens this Friday for the winter ski season. Heck… we’re going to ride it a couple times just for the fun of it... IT’S THAT PRETTY! This only means we’re one step closer to Opening Day of the 2012/2013 Winter ski Season (November 22nd)!!!! Check out this view...

Saturday, November 17thTurkey Bingo – the annual (and awesome) Turkey Bingo at the Elks Lodge is back! Definitely one of the best nights of the off-season. The Lodge will open at 4pm with Kids Bingo from 4-6pm. Hot turkey sandwich dinner for kids = $4. And don’t miss the Adult Bingo: 7-10pm. Hot turkey sandwich, cranberry sauce, stuffing, mashed potatoes, green beans and more = $8. Play bingo and win turkeys!!! See you at the Elks!

Saturday, November 17thThe Great Funktier concert in Durango, CO – we had to give our local funk band, The Great Funktier, a shout-out. The Mountain Film Experience

Posted on May 31, 2012 by katherine

This past weekend’s Mountain Film Festival has sadly come to a close. For everyone who got to attend, I think you can agree that it was a blast. For those who couldn’t, here’s a little recap. It all began on Friday Morning with the opening Symposium at the Conference Center in Mountain Village. A crowd of both curious young people and veterans on the topic gathered outside, happily waiting in the sunshine until the doors opened and the festival could kick off.

This year’s Mountain Film theme was population, an issue that is often over looked but really deserves some thought. It started off with speaker Paul Ehrlich, professor at Stamford and author of the 1968 book “Population Bomb.” He was able to talk about some serious issues with population growth and the environment while managing to sneak in some humor. Ehlrich and other speakers that followed made some really interesting points about problems outside of just climate change, being the rise of diseases, toxic chemicals, and consumption patterns. Even if the issues on hand are a bit discouraging by nature, the whole discussion turned out to be really motivating and inspirational. As Ehrlich said, we need to change the type of discussion around this type of global issue!

Later that day, Main Street was buzzing and the crowds were coming in. People from all over were out chatting about the cool films to come. My first screening was Friday night, and was probably the most fun of all; climbing and slack lining shorts followed by presentations from world famous athletes Chris Sharma and Dean Potter. If you haven’t already, you need to check out the short clip called Moonwalk, a really amazing example of Dean’s skills in balance and focus.

Some of the other films that got me psyched to get outside and play were shown at the Adrenaline Series, a free series of shorts held at the outdoor Base Camp Theater. It was cold, but that didn’t stop people from showing up. Town Park was packed with people with sleeping bags, blankets, and lawn chairs to hang out in under the stars. Everyone stared in awe as films like Code Red (surfing), Race for the Nose (climbing El Capitan) and other ski and mountain bike segments played on the big screen.

Another short adventure film that I got to catch was called Treeverse. I would say that this was one of the more unique films I saw. It documents a feat by two arborists who used ropes and harnesses to traverse from branch to branch, eventually traveling a kilometer without touching the ground. There really are no limits to what a little creativity and determination can achieve!

Some of my other favorites from the rest of the weekend were not as wild and full of excitement, but still really moving. The film that sticks with me the most is titled Fambul Tok, a longer documentary set in Sierra Leone that won the 2012 Norman Vaughan Indomitable Spirit Award. It sends a pretty striking message about the power of forgiveness and peacemaking.

Another that I got to catch was the film Right to Play, winner of the 2012 Audience Award. It documented an organization spearheaded by Olympic speed racer that brings sports equipment and games to children in a number of African countries. Other winners of this year’s festival include Chasing Ice, Bidder 70, Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry, and J.P. Auclair’s segment in All. I. Can.

All in all, the Mountain Film Fest was another huge success. The kickoff to summer, it got me excited for what’s to come. The weather was a bit windy at times (those who went to the ice cream social got to experience a small dust storm) but people in Telluride are always prepared. The films were great, the people were great, and I’m sure what comes out next year will be even better.

Telluride Film Festival Recap

Posted on September 6, 2011 by Hart

Now that the 2011 Telluride Film Festival has concluded – this year’s eclectic mix of films continues to prove why the Telluride Film Festival is different from so many other film festivals.

Having George Clooney and Tilda Swinton in attendance as silver medallion tributes didn’t hurt the celebrity “wattage”.  However, not having to attend red carpet events, being able to mix with the locals and attendees without worrying about “who they were wearing” and basically enjoying the low key vibe that is Telluride was refreshing.  Add Glenn Close and Jennifer Garner to the list of celebrities also in town and it made for another enthusiastic event.

Telluride Film Festival has always been and remains – simply about the love of films.  With that as a narrative, Telluride has always selected films that may not necessarily appeal to those people looking for the next box office blockbuster.  The goal being – find those films that embody the core essence of what films are meant to do - provoke, entertain, disturb, amuse, etc.  Some of the films premiered in Telluride have been commercial successes and probably many more have not been – but those less commercial films are no less embraced and enjoyed by the festival crowd.  In fact, standing in line listening to what people enjoyed most are often small, mindful films that you need to seek out afterwards from art house rental companies or art house movie theaters.

This year’s menu of films was no exception.  Some examples include “The Descendants”, starring George Clooney and directed by Alexander Payne - a film more inclined to be commercially successful.  Then there’s “The Artist” – a silent film shot in black and white…beautifully acted and highly entertaining but certainly a commercial crap shoot given it’s format.  Glenn Close delivered another brilliant performance in “Albert Nobbs” – a period piece both comic and heartbreaking but again, how will it do commercially?  Those films are a small slice of what was offered this year – many more films  delivering the kind of experience the Telluride Film Festival devotees have come to respect and rely on…all the while, comfortably in their jeans!

I have fond memories of sitting in the pouring rain with hundreds of other people watching Sean Penn’s “Into the Wild” or hearing hundreds of people scream simultaneously out loud during Oren Peli’s “Paranormal Activity” or watching “The King’s Speech” for the 3rd time because it’s just THAT good. There’s just something unique and real about bring a sleeping bag, a bottle of wine and watching these films in the cool, dark, starry Telluride night. Wednesday night the Abel Gance Open Air Cinema kicks of the TFF with the first FREE film of the Labor Day Weekend, “Never Cry Wolf” at 8:30pm. All Labor Day Weekend – Get Outside! – Make sure you take the time in between films to get outside and explore some of the amazing hikes right in our backyard. Bear Creek Falls is a nice beginner-intermediate hike (5 miles round trip) starting on South Pine Street. The Jud Wiebe is a great quick hike you can do in between films, shorter but a little steeper, starting on North Aspen Street (2.5 miles). You can hike up to the views of Town and then hike down instead of doing the entire trail… takes 1-1.5 hours. Make sure you visit Colorado’s largest free-falling waterfall at the end of the valley, Bridal Veil Falls. If you have a vehicle, pack a lunch & a fly rod and check out Alta Lakes (about 15-20 minutes outside of Telluride). It’s simply stunning. Whatever you do… make sure you get outside and enjoy Telluride’s pure beauty while the Summer's still here!

Telluride Film Festival... unlike any other Film Festival in the World.

Posted on August 30, 2011 by Hart

Traditionally, Labor Day is celebrated by most Americans as the symbolic end of the summer vacation season. For some, it’s the last time to visit the beach for the year, or the last time to wear that favorite white, linen shirt hanging in the closet, or maybe it’s the last time you enjoy a nice picnic or barbecue with friends and family. Here in Telluride, Labor Day weekend is celebrated as a beginning. A commencement to a heated race of reviews, critiques, festivals and silver screen gazing… all hoping for as many miniature golden statues as possible five months later at the Academy Awards. “We take great pains to remain not a competition, but a celebration of the best in film – past, present and future – from all around the world. This is the one weekend immersed in an unabashed carnival of film: viewing, breathing, eating, and talking cinema. This is The SHOW”.

“…like Cannes died and went to heaven…” – Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

So, what makes Telluride Film Festival (TFF) unique and different than all the others – Sundance, Cannes, Venice, Toronto and more? First and most importantly, TFF is WAY more laid back. You won’t find any red carpets, TMZ, paparazzi, flashing cameras, stretch Hummer’s, champagne and other Hollywood-esk moments (thank God)... all the glamour and glitz is left behind when you arrive in our box canyon. You might even randomly sit beside Sean Penn at the Sheridan Bar having a beer (true story) or even get behind Laura Linney at the Clark’s Market checkout line (she’s pretty much a local) or stroll by Colin Firth on Main Street and exchange hello’s (another true story). Instead of black-tie, invite only events… TFF offers free Q&A’s in Elks Park where you can bring a blanket, lunch and enjoy the views of the surrounding 13,000 foot peaks. Relaxed, unhurried, casual, free from stress is something the film industry doesn’t embrace (for many reasons)… and that’s what makes Telluride so much more memorable.

“The town’s theatres are filled with the famous, the infamous, and the anonymous, seated side by side in a joyful camaraderie of discovery” – Steven G. Kellman, San Antonio Light

Second, TFF is about one thing - the love of film. A TRUE film festival where the films, not celebrities, are celebrated. The entire program is even a secret all the way up until hours before the festival starts. TFF calls their films “sneak peaks” and not “premieres” - the emphasis is on the movies and their creative teams, not on the announcement. Little things like this make the Labor Day Festival so special here in Telluride. With this charm and laidback attitude, it’s no wonder TFF has “sneak peaked” The King’s Speech, Black Swan, Slumdog Millionaire, The Lives of Others, Juno, Brokeback Mountain and many, many more fantastic films in recent years. Maybe it’s something in the air? Whatever it is… we look forward to another amazing and laidback Labor Day weekend here in Telluride. Welcome to The SHOW!

“The Telluride Festival is for those who have a passion for the cinema, those who live for the cinema, those who live for the cinema, rather than those who live on the cinema” – Bertrand Tavernier
