Blues & Brews

Interview with JP Miller of Yo Mama's Big Fat Booty Band

Posted on March 5, 2013 by Hart

Yesterday at Telluride.com we interviewed with J.P. Miller, guitarist and vocalist for Yo Mama’s Big Fat Booty Band, who have played at Telluride Blues & Brews and will return to Telluride this Thursday for a night of funky dance music at the historic Sheridan Opera House!

T.com: We’re excited to have you out here, I wanted to start ask you guys a few questions. We’re extremely pumped to have you back out here in Telluride!

J.P.: Cool, man, we’re excited to be back, our last show there got cancelled, the club we were supposed to play at closed down or stopped having live music…

T.com: Yeah that was a bummer. You guys played the Main stage at Blues & Brews.

J.P.: We had a great turnout at Telluride [Blues & Brews], it was awesome. We were really excited about that…

T.com: Yeah there’s nothing like playing Town Park, but I think you guys are going to blow up the late night scene, especially at the historic Opera House. That will be sweet. To start out, we’d all love to know where the band name comes from. It’s such a unique band name, really stands out, we’d love to hear the story!

J.P.: Well, I think the story for this month is… we’ve been a band for ten years, we can’t use the same story over and over again - that would be boring. So our whole band came from outer space. The Booty Mama, our band mascot, we take orders from Booty Mama through cats; we get our messages from cats. Basically we are here to improve things on earth, during the day we do the superhero thing, and then at night we recharge our energy by throwing funk shows. We feed off the energy of the people, we figured we’d pick funk music as our medium, as it’s high energy uplifting music… so that’s where that all started from.

T.com: That’s an awesome story… that’s probably the best answer I could have imagined. I was curious, how would you describe your band’s current sound? You’ve been touring for a decade, so obviously it’s evolved a bit. Tell me more about that.

J.P.: Well you know we’ve gone through a lot of member changes at this point, currently playing with only two original members of the band, only the bass player and myself. When the band first started off, it was a funk band with Josh Phillips, he was writing a lot of material and singing a lot. He had kind of a happy-go-lucky, poppy funk approach to the music. We split ways with him because he wanted to do more acoustic stuff and we wanted to get heavier. So he left the band… and we continued on our path, went through a bunch of different member changes. One year we had 13 different drummers, and we’ve finally settled in with this duo that we’ve been playing shows with for a long time, by the name of Uamirel, a drummer and a keyboardist. We’ve been playing shows with those guys… eventually they moved to Asheville and it happened, so that’s been the lineup we’ve been rocking for the last three years… we’ve been playing a little bit darker, a little bit heavier, more electronic and rock influenced now mixed in with our funk. It’s all still super danceable music. Now we have a bunch of synthesizers, drum pads, and crazy bass stuff on stage so we get a little bit heavier with that. We’ve also been incorporating some hip-hop into our sound.

T.com: Yeah I definitely noticed that. It’s a very cool sound.

J.P.: Kind of a cool transition.

T.com: Do you have any major influencing artists that you all really draw inspiration from these days?

J.P: We listen to lots of new music as well as lots of old music. As a whole, the band is definitely influenced by the Red Hot Chili Peppers and George Clinton and P. Funk. If you’re riding around in the van with us, you’ll hear anything from the Mars Volta to Beethoven. Everyone in the band is really open with new music coming out… there’s a lot of music going on right now that we’re digging on right now.

T.com: So which instrument do you play J.P., and are there any artists that you’re personally inspired by in your playing?

J.P.: My main influence is probably John Frusciante from the Red Hot Chili Peppers; also Slash from Guns ‘N’ Roses, Jimi Hendrix. I grew up listening to rock so even though we play funk I definitely shred up the guitar a little bit.

T.com: Yeah there’s definitely a lot of crossover between your influences and the funk genre you play with YMBFBB. We’re so excited to see you guys at the Opera House on Thursday night! It was a pleasure talking to you, we’ll see you in Telluride later this week!

J.P.: Thanks!

Be sure to stay tuned for Yo Mama’s Big Fat Booty Band’s new album to be released this summer. Their recently released album, “Doin’ It,” is available as a double LP on vinyl, CD, and digital downloads via their website.

19th Annual Blues & Brews: A Success!

Posted on September 17, 2012 by Maggie
Another beautiful Blues & Brews has come and gone, but what a weekend it was! Day three left nothing to be desired. The Lee Boys and Kelley Hunt kicked off the day in fine fashion with back to back soulful performances. And though many of this year’s performances were laiden with rock influences, Phil Wiggins and Rev. John Wilkins brought the jazzy blues of the South to Telluride Town Park. The pair looked relaxed on stage as they demonstarted exciting tone and technique and Rev. Wilkins spoke to the crowd as he paid homage to his father’s talent as a celebrated blues and gospel singer.

Tab Benoit provided an engaging and orignal performance and I was able to lie back on the grass and enjoy listening to these swampy blues. The Chris Robinson Brotherhood was one of my favorites of the day with their updated 70's look and sound. This performance was by no means short on talent.

And last but not least...It’s hard to believe that Phil Lesh is seventy-two years old when hear the complexities of his work on the electric bass. Lesh didn’t miss a beat last night, reminding everyone in the crowd of his legendary prowess and innovation that has continued to pull music into new ages. With the addition of Warren Haynes on guitar and vocals, the group showed off their instrumental talents with a harder, faster rock tone that made audience “Dead-heads” go wild.  One of the most brilliant aspects of this performance was its ability to speak to an intergenterational audience. As I stood listening to Lesh jam, I found myself surrounded by a thirty-something couple, a mother and daughter, a college student, and a sixty year old gentleman who had been to Blues & Brews every year for the past thirteen years . Needless to say, every member of the crowd was on their feet for this both classic and exploitory performance.

There's no denying that Telluride's 19th Annual Blues & Brews festival was a success! The headliners delivered and those less well known blew us away. I am still riding high on the excitement of these brilliant performances, tasty beers, and great company. Thanks for a fantastic weekend festivarians. Hope to see you all again for next year's festival!

Blues & Brews Featured Artist: Little Hurricane

Posted on September 13, 2012 by Maggie

Little Hurricane Performs LIVE at the Sheridan Opera House TONIGHT (Thursday, September 13th, 2012)!

Celeste “C.C.” Spina, a cook and bartender, put out an add on Craigslist looking for like-minded musicians and Anthony “Tone” Catalano, impressed by a woman on the drums, struck an interest.  The two turned out to be practically neighbors, living just up the street from one another in North Park, San Diego.  Stricking up a blues-jazz collaborative, the two have a raw sound and lyrics that tap into some of the more difficult aspects of life: death, age, loneliness, lies. Little Hurricane says about themselves, “We’re small, but we’re powerful.” Their major influences include Van Morrison, Carole King, George Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic. C.C. has been playing the drums since age ten where she got started in school band. Keep an ear out for “Homewrecker” probably the duos most recognizable song and check out the video below off their debut album.

The Official Blues & Brews Bible

Posted on September 11, 2012 by Maggie

Who’s ready for some Blues, Brews and GORGEOUS views? We want you to be ready for an epic weekend here in Telluride… so we’ve created the “Blues & Brews Bible” – A complete guide on what to do, what to bring, who to see, where to eat/drink/play and any other info that will help you have the best weekend of your life. CHEERS!

What to Do – A lot of your time will be taken up in Town Park (not a bad thing)… BUT, if you want to get outside and explore all that Telluride has to offer, here are a few recommendations on ‘What to Do’ around town this weekend:

  • Drink Beer - Yes, please. The general theme of the entire festival is to drink beer and be merry… Saturday will host 50+ microbreweries from across the nation during the Grand Tasting in Town Park. Make sure you travel around and “taste” these amazing brews. And don’t forget to vote for your favorite brew (you’ll receive a chip in your tasting glass to place at your favorite brewery tent). For a complete list of ALL the breweries attending this year’s festival, click here: http://tellurideblues.com/breweries.html
  • Sunset Blues Concert - Thursday evening, September 13th 5:00-7:00pm, FREE kick off Blues & Brews Festival Concert in Mountain Village Sunset Plaza featuring MarchFourth Marching Band. Bring a blanket and a bottle of wine and come celebrate the 19th annual Telluride Blues & Brews festival in style!
  • Juke Joints - These Late Night Shows are one of the best parts of our festival weekend! Listen to your favorite bands up close and personal at some of Telluride's most historic venues. Little Hurricane kicks off our four night juke joint schedule with stellar lineups Friday and Saturday nights closing with Anders Osborne & Friends on Sunday. Buy a Friday and/or Saturday Juke Joint ticket and you’ll be able to attend a show of your choice (first come, first serve)…but make sure you get these early, they will definitely sell-out! ANYTHING at the Sheridan Opera House is not to be missed! Check out the full Juke Joint schedule at: http://tellurideblues.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=standard&categoryId=4&subcategoryId=3
  • Telluride Farmers Market - Friday afternoon from 11:00am-4:00pm on South Oak Street, the Telluride Farmers Market will take place. Stroll through many local vendors and farmers providing great products - flowers, vegetables, kettle corn popcorn (you've got to try this stuff!), live music, massages, art and much more! For a list of vendors, visit: http://www.thetelluridefarmersmarket.com/
  • Blues for Breakfast - The top 6 entries from the Telluride Acoustic Blues Competition will play at the Elks Lodge on Saturday, September 15th from 9:00am-Noon. The winner of the competition will play on Main Stage later that afternoon. Come eat pancakes and cheer on the finalists! For more info, check out: http://tellurideblues.com/competition.html
  • Hike – If you need a break (recommended) from all the delicious beer… check out one of our amazing hiking trails that start from Downtown. Bear Creek Trail is less than one block from Town Park (S. Pine Street) and is a perfect beginner trail (5 miles round trip, gradual the entire way) up to the beautiful Bear Creek Falls. If you need a little more challenging hike, check out the Jud Wiebe Trail (N. Aspen Street) that takes you to an overlook of the entire town. This trail is fairly steep at the beginning (2.5 miles round trip) with several switchbacks… but, the view from the top is worth every step. Bring your camera for killer shots of Town, Town Park, the Ski Resort and more. For more information and pictures of local hikes, check out our top favorite hikes in Telluride: http://www.telluride.com/lodging/top-five-hikes-telluride
  • Ride the Gondola – The only FREE transportation of its kind in the country… the Gondola is a must-do while visiting Telluride. If you don’t journey up to the free concert on Thursday night, make sure you take the time to check out this spectacular ride. Get out up top (San Sophia) to hike around or ride it down into Mountain Village to check out the local bars, shops and restaurants.
  • Walk the River Trail – Our "major" thoroughfare in the town of Telluride, the River Trail connects the West end of Telluride to the East End & Town Park. Take a walk along the beautiful San Miguel River to and from your condo or hotel... or walk all the way "Down Valley" to get some excerise and/or see wild elk.
  • Mingle with the Locals – After spending the weekend here in Telluride... you're going to want to come back, we can promise you that. Mingle with some locals at the festival, bar, restaurants... and make friends. It's always good to have a connection in town so you can get the "local scoop" when you visit us again for the ski season or next summer!
  • Rainbow Kids Area – This is definitely a kid-friendly event! Children 11 and under are free at the festival and campground. The Rainbow Kids area provides plenty of entertainment on the festival grounds, including inflatable games and climbing wall, face painting, talent show, and more.
  • See Bridal Veil Falls – Want to check out Colorado's largest free-falling waterfall? It's right in our backyard. Ideally, a car would be the easiest and closest way to check it out... but you can hike down (along the River Trail) to the parking area and see the falls and old mining structures. At 360+ feet, its a must-see!

What to Bring – Make sure you pack for all 4 seasons… Telluride weather is extremely hard to predict. It’s been dipping down into the cooler temps (40’s) at night, so pack accordingly. Pack a rain jacket, hiking boots and a sun hat. Don’t forget your CAMERA. You’ll find great opportunities to take some beautiful photos around town and great pictures of your drunk friends. Oh yea, don’t forget to pack your Party Pants.

Who to See – This year’s lineup is amazing. You ideally need to see every single show because they’re all incredible and diverse. BUT, if I had to choose a couple unique shows (this is a VERY tough one) that you absolutely can’t miss, these would be the ones (for the complete schedule and times, visit: http://tellurideblues.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=standard&categoryId=2&subcategoryId=2

  • Heartless BastardsThese guys are definitely one of my favorites! The Ohioans originally formed in 2003 and have a similar sound to The Black Keys. Erika Wennerstrom, the only constant member, has an incredibly unique sound and wails on vocals. “Parted Ways” is a personal favorite of mine.
  • Gov’t Mule – When they weren’t busy making records with the Allman Brothers Band, Warren Haynes and Allen Woody took up a side project which became Gov’t Mule. These guys are some of the hardest working bands in rock history and have a classic Southern rock, blues, and funk collaboration that is not to be missed!
  • The B-52s – Nicknamed the World’s Greatest Party Band, the B52s have produced over 30 years of timeless classics.  Their unforgettable hits include, “Rock Lobster,” “Planet Claire,” “Love Shack” and “Roam,” all sure to get you into the dance-party mood!
  • Orgone – Funk and soul are these guys’ specialty! Almost all self-taught musicians, Orgone is well known as one of the “baddest go-to backing bands on the planet.” If you dig rhythmic instrumentals and upbeat funk, these beats are for you!
  • The Chris Robinson Brotherhood – The lineup includes Adam MacDougall (of the Black Crowes), George Sluppick, Mark “Muddy” Dutton (of Burning Tree), and Neal Casal. Can’t miss this set!
  • Phil Lesh & Friends – One of the most extraordinary musical talents in rock history…No way I’m going to miss this!

Where to Eat – The festival food in Town Park is to die for. Maybe that’s because we only get to eat it a couple times a summer… or maybe it’s because there are no Fast Food restaurants in town. BUT, if you’re looking to get out of Town Park, there are some fabulous places to eat around town… here are the top places to grab a bite to eat while you’re in town. For a list of ALL restaurants, visit the 2012 Telluride Dining Guide here: http://www.telluride.com/telluride/telluride-dining-guide

  • Brown Dog Pizza – Want to catch some College or NFL Football between sets? Head over to the best Sports Bar in town. Brown Dog Pizza is located on Main Street and has delicious pizza, subs, salads and of course, ice cold PBR on tap.
  • Floradora – Looking for the best burger in town? Checkout Floradora on Main Street for delicious burgers (get the Matty Burger!), jalapeño poppers, salads, Sliders and more!
  • New Sheridan – Hands down some of the best food in town. You can eat two ways – very nice or laid back. ‘Very nice’ consists of sitting down for a nice steak and glass of wine. Or you can eat ‘Laid back’ by sitting at the bar or in the Parlor Bar for an informal meal with the same tasty menu.
  • Baked in Telluride – GREAT spot to grab coffee and a quick breakfast in the morning… “BIT” offers bagels, doughnuts, croissants, muffins, pizza, sandwiches, cookies and a whole lot more.
  • La Cocina – Delicious spot to grab some organic Mexican food. On main street with indoor and outdoor seating.

Where to Drink – We like to drink here in Telluride... hence, the Blues & BREWS Festival. Here are the top bars we recommend checking out after Town Park to keep the party going:

  • The Last Dollar Saloon – called “The Buck”… a great, laidback local joint to drink some PBR, play some foosball and mingle with the locals. The Buck is CASH ONLY... so don't be that guy who breaks out a credit card.
  • New Sheridan – Come shoot some Pool in this historic old-timey bar. Great vibe, music and drinks.
  • The Steaming Bean – Best place in town to grab a cup of joe in the morning... live music and full bar in the evenings. The perfect, cool hangout spot to get on the internet if you need to and mingle with locals.
  • Sheridan Opera House – Great place to grab a drink and check out live music! One of my three favorite venues in the COUNTRY (the other two are Red Rocks and Telluride Town Park)... the Opera House is small, intimate, and always a good time. Go see a live show here and check it off your bucketlist.

Where to Park – Parking is always a free-for-all when it comes to 8,000+ people traveling to our tiny town of 2,000 year round residences. Here are tips for parking, camping and more from the Telluride Daily Planet:

  • Parking meters remain in effect all weekend except Sunday.
  • Permit parking zones W, O and G are suspended and not in effect Friday through Sunday.
  • The regular town loop of the Galloping Goose Transit system will operate on Thursday from 7:00am-1:00am, Friday and Saturday from 7:00am-2:00am, and Sunday from 7:00am-midnight.
  • The Gondola will operate on Thursday from 7:00am-1:00am, Friday and Saturday from 7:00am-2:00am, and Sunday from 7:00am-midnight.
  • There will be free day and overnight parking available in Mountain Village on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Gondola Parking Garage. Pay to park day and overnight parking will be available at the Heritage Parking Garage. Space will be limited in the parking garages and parking will not be available on the roadways.
  • Please no parking on South Oak Street on Friday between 8:00am-6:00pm for the Telluride Farmers Market.
  • Car camping is not allowed on streets or rights-of-way in the Town of Telluride.

Blog from our Telluride Blues & Brews Contest Winner, Jon.

Posted on September 21, 2011 by Hart
We teamed up with Telluride Blues & Brews & The River Club to run a Facebook contest for a FREE 4-night stay at The River Club for the 2011 festival weekend. Our big winner was Jon Pierson from Albuquerque, NM and to say he was ecstatic... would be a HUGE understatement! He was kind enough to write up a blog and video from his experiences in Telluride, check it out:

"We did it!  Woo hoo!  My fourth Telluride Blues and Brews Festival is in the bag, but I have to say this one was very, VERY special for two specific reasons.  The first was that I was able to bring my five month old Benjamin to his second music festival, the first being the (also awesome) Taos Mountain Music Festival in New Mexico and his first trip to Telluride.  So he was primed for some great music and a weekend in a beautiful setting, and so was I.  The second thing that made this particular trip to Telluride so incredible was that we were the big winners of 4 nights’ accommodations at The River Club, a “luxurious, Private Residence Club in the Town of Telluride.”  Thanks to Telluride.com and their Facebook page, we learned about the contest, and figured why not give it a shot.  We had camping passes already purchased (and lots of warm clothes!) as a backup plan.  The Monday before the festival, I got a voicemail saying we had won the contest.  To say we were ecstatic would be to put it lightly.

We packed up, said bye to my wife who sadly couldn’t make the trip and on Thursday made the 6 hour (8 with a baby) drive from Albuquerque to Telluride.  We arrived late, though the staff made our check in as smooth as possible, and within 1 hour of arrival I had Benny asleep in a beautiful crib, provided by the River Club, so we could rest up for the first day of Blues and Brews!  The two bedroom suite was absolutely gorgeous, and so much easier than camping with the little one in such frigid temps!  The staff was beyond accommodating, every single person we met was kind and helpful and I could not think of a place I would rather stay in Telluride than The River Club.  Boy was it nice.  Musical highlights of the weekend included moe., Anders Osborne, Yo Mama’s Big Fat Booty Band, obviously the Flaming Lips, and Benny’s favorite, Willie Nelson!  He was making little sounds through Willie’s whole set; I think he was trying to sing along.  It was too cute.  Having the accommodations so close to the festival made it a piece of cake to go to and from.  And Benny saw his first snowflake Saturday during the glorious beer tasting.  Have to say my personal favorite was the Santa Fe Brewing Company’s Happy Camper IPA though there were many, many delicious beers to sample.  What a time!

We had so much fun, and are so grateful that we won the contest.  Here’s a little thank you video, and some pictures for you to enjoy. Benny was a huge hit, everyone loved him.  It was such a family friendly festival!  Thank you for all the love, and the wonderful experience.  We’ll be back!

CHEERS!

-Jon Pierson"

After 3 full days of live music and festival-going... we definitely have the "Case of the Monday's". Such a great weekend here in Telluride with great friends, amazing shows, "alright" weather (everyone made the best of it, for sure.), delicious food, beautiful scenery and good times had by all. Watch a few clips from this weekend's festival... we hope to have everyone back next summer for another amazing Festival season!

The Flaming Lips in Town Park

Posted on September 19, 2011 by Hart
Wow. One of the craziest and most fun shows we've ever seen in Town Park. Oversized hands, Confetti, balloons, hamster ball, Dark Side of the Moon cover, Wizard of Oz dancers, lasers and A LOT more confetti... what a performance and theatrical show. Check out video from The Flaming Lips concert on Friday night of the 18th annual Telluride Blues & Brews Festival:
