Telluride Summer Activities

Need a list of the best summer actvities in Telluride, Colorado? Here are a few things you've got to check out while you're visiting us!

Hiking Trails

  • Beginner – The Bear Creek Trail is located on S. Pine Street right down the street from downtown Telluride. This is a more gradual trail leading to a beautiful waterfall back in the Bear Creek Preserve. This is a longer hike (5 miles total) but the gradual incline makes it family-friendly and a great trail to bring the pup along with.
  • Intermediate – The Jud Wiebe starts at the top of N. Aspen Street and is steep at first, but the view on top, is worth every step! You can turn around at the top (1 hour round-trip) or continue to hike down the back side towards Tomboy Road… which is all downhill and a lot easier! Gorgeous views of the Telluride Ski Resort, Town of Telluride and Ajax peak. Another great Intermediate trail is Bridal Veil Falls. You can drive to the bottom or top of the waterfall… cutting out a lot of the terrain. We recommend driving to the base of the falls and hiking to the top. This is Colorado’s largest free-falling waterfall… a must-do while visiting Telluride!
  • Advance – Ajax Peak is a spectacular hike starting at the top of Bridal Veil Falls via the infamous Black Bear trail. Weaving back and forth for a couple hours… you finally peak the summit with 360 degree views of Imogene Pass, Silver Lake, Town of Telluride and more. Check out the view here: http://bit.ly/I9iLuy

Fly Fishing

  • The San Miguel River flows directly through town and provides some of the best fly fishing in Southwest Colorado for beginner and advance fisherman. Hike “Down Valley” from Downtown Telluride or drive a few miles towards Placerville for a day on the river. Need a guide to show you the best spots? Visit our friends at Telluride Outside for a half-day or full-day guided fly fishing trip. Ask for John Shueller or Cameron Barker – two awesome dudes!

Camping

  • Alta Lakes – “Where Heaven Meets Earth”. It’s seriously one of the prettiest spots in the Telluride region. Just 20-25 minutes up the road from Mountain Village, Alta Lakes provides the perfect summer camping grounds for families and friends. Drive up (4-wheel drive vehicle recommended), setup camp and take in the views of Palmyra Peak and 3-4 high-alpine lakes. Even if you don’t want to camp, it makes for the perfect day-trip to a gorgeous spot.

Biking

  • Whether you’re into Mountain Biking, Road Biking or just strolling around town… Telluride provides the ideal biking paradise for all types and levels. Mountain Village provides an extreme downhill Mountain Biking course that can be accessed via the free Gondola. It hosts the Fall Tilt 12-Hour Endurance race in the Fall. Road Biking along Highway 145 provides some of the most challenging and amazing views of anywhere in the world. We’re welcoming the USA Pro Cycling Challenge Stage 1 Finish in downtown Telluride on August 20th… where pro bikers will be racing from Durango, over Lizard Head Pass, into downtown Telluride. If you’re looking for just a stroll around town, rent a bike from Telluride Sports and enjoy all Telluride has to offer – riding on the River Trail is a blast!

Whitewater Rafting

  • This year’s snowmelt is coming sooner than later… so, hope on whitewater rafting quick! Telluride Outside or Mild to Wild Rafting & Jeep Trail Tours offer half-day and full-day trips on the San Miguel River. We’ve done the stretch from Placerville to Species Creek… and it was a BLAST! Great family friendly activity… but hop on it in May or June for the best conditions!

Golf

  • Telluride Golf Club opens in late May and is honestly one of the prettiest courses you’ll ever play! 12,000-13,000 foot peaks surrounding you as you weave through the thawed out ski slopes of Telluride Ski Resort. Did you know that your ball will travel 15% further due to the altitude?? FORE!!! Golf runs into late Fall and is the perfect way to spend an afternoon in the San Juan Mountains.

Jeeping

  • We recommend taking a jeep ride up to the infamous Imogene Pass… it’s absolutely breathtaking. And can you believe miners use to live above 13,000+ feet?! Take a tour with Telluride Sports of Telluride Outside and learn history the entire way up the rocky trail. In the Fall, the famous Imogene Pass Run takes place – starting in Ouray, Colorado and ending on Main Street in Telluride. 17.1 miles total… they jeep trip is a lot easier! This is another must-do while you’re in town… really cool experience.

Town Park

  • The prettiest Town Park in the world hosts many outdoor activities throughout the entire summer. Basketball, tennis, Skate Park, horseshoes, softball, swimming pool and more! Not to mention, almost every weekend there is an amazing music festival going on at the Town Park Stage. Great place to take a blanket and have a picnic with the family, bask in the sun or play “ball” with your dogs.
