But there's no better way to go out on a remarkable summer than to end with the Telluride Blues and Brews festival.

This year we were blessed with beautiful, blue-bird skies while Gov't Mule, G.Love, the John Butler Trio, Derek Trucks, Etta James and many more jammed out on main stage in Telluride's breath-taking Town Park. And that's just half the fun... Saturday of Blues and Brews is the Grand Tasting with over 50 microbreweries from all around the country. For three hours you can enjoy live music while sampling over 150 different kinds of beer, which will leave you with over 150 different reasons to never leave this beautiful box canyon. Cheers to an amazing summer!

"When B.B. King performed here in 2004, he sat on this same stage, looked out at the mountains before him, and told the crowd, "Out of the 90 different countries I've been to, I've never seen anything more beautiful than what you have here.""

By maintaining its "Unmatched in North America" standards, Telluride Ski Resort has just recently opened new terrain for all to enjoy! New terrain always brings a smile to the faces of locals, die-hard skiers, and the experienced tourist and with the opening of Gold Hill chutes 6 through 10; this will truly put Telluride into a whole new bracket. This past weekend, after I watched my own NCAA bracket crumble in upsets, I decided to ski away my tournament worries and hike to Gold Hill Chute #9. I don't know why #9, but I had been eyeing it all season, anxiously watching ski patrol prepare and control the area. After months of snow and extensive avalanche control, Gold Hill chutes provide expert terrain where precision plays an important role.

The 45 minute hike takes you through the backcountry gate at the top of Gold Hill with awe-inspiring views of Bear Creek and San Joaquin Bowl (which someday might also be opened to the public). The #9 chute was rock-strewn, narrow and steep, but some of the best turns of the season. At the end of the chute you are dumped into the finest snow on the mountain, Palmyra basin, with hundreds of yards of open turns and knee-deep powder. I was ecstatic to get some new terrain into the last couple weeks of the season and can't wait to see what TelSki has to offer next year!

It's après time. I had heard good things about the Inn at Lost Creek, so I decided to ski down and check out 9545.
Perfectly situated at 9,545 ft. in elevation, 9545 Restaurant and Bar is Mountain Village's answer to fine dining, convenient Après ski, and a relaxed bar atmosphere. Nestled at the bottom of lift 4, this ski-in/ski-out restaurant is somehow sophisticated and laid-back at the same time. With a convenient ski valet service and slippers provided for ski-boot weary diners, you are immediately met with the award winning service of a "Top 100 Best Hotel in the World" (Reader's Choice Awards - Conde Nast Traveler 2003).

9545's main menu offers fresh, seasonal ingredients for your fine dining experience. The featured dinner menu includes "24 hour" fresh Alaskan King Salmon, Spice Grilled Pork Tenderloin, a hearty Buffalo Sirloin and many more mouth-watering entrees. In a rush or in the mood for a more casual atmosphere? 9545's bar is the place to relax and admire the whimsical sunsets in the evenings. My favorite part of 9545's bar was the convenience of ordering from either the main menu or the Après bar menu while enjoying the laid-back environment. To satisfy a skier's appetite try the Crab & Avocado wrap, Portobello Fries, the "Best Burger in Telluride" and don't forget to wash it down with one of their many specialty winter cocktails. The bar tends to be a bit crowded during the Après ski rush, but overall, well worth the wait. From a quick bite to multiple-course dining, 9545 truly has "an elevated dining experience" above the rest.

For more Telluride local scoop visit: http://www.telluride.com/around-town/telluride-local-scoop.html

After months of avalanche control and hard work from Telluride's ski patrol, this new terrain is available for the first time in years. This amazing hike-to terrain includes over 200 acres and a 2,000 vertical feet scramble to the 13,320 foot peak. We began our trek at 10:30 in the morning on a crystal clear, blue-sky day with conditions better than ideal. As Palmyra stared down on us, we were unaware of the very strenuous climb ahead. With loose rock, steep terrain, and extreme falls on either side, this was not a hike for the weary. After an hour and a half we finally reached our destination, 13,320 feet in elevation and the most stunning view that I've ever seen in my life. And that was just the beginning...

Palmyra Peak

After a much needed break on top, we strapped on our skis and started choosing our lines. We dropped in and immediately had an ear-to-ear grin for the rest of the 10 minute run. With smiles and powder up to our knees, it was worth every step of the 2,000 vertical foot hike. It was truly an amazing day and the best thing is... "What can be considered some of the most spectacular in-bounds terrain in North America", is right here in our backyard!

Living on the outskirts of Telluride, everyone told me to get a snowmobile for the winter. Snowmobile, please, I have a Jeep! Apparently I wasn't ready for exactly how much snow we would be getting. My poor little Jeep, she tries, but sometimes the shear thought of driving thru 4 feet of snow makes her cringe. Boy, I wish I had bought a snowmobile!

The Snowmobilers

I had never been snowmobiling. I come from the east coast where we ride jet skis. With all this snow, I thought I would give it a shot. My 3 buddies and I called MD at Telluride Snowmobile Adventures and booked a tour. A 2 hour tour. We arrived at "snow base" ready for some fun. After we got fitted for our helmets and heard the safety procedures, we hopped on our own brand new snowmobiles. "Wow" was all I could say. This is going to be awesome! It was in the negatives and snowing that day, but it was so much fun that it didn't matter that I couldn't feel my toes.

In single file lines, we bobbed and weaved thru trees up to the Alta Lakes Ghost Town, and old mining town, where MD gave us a great history lesson about the area. Not to mention how beautiful the scenery is up there, breathtaking. So not only were we having an amazing time, we were actually learning something. Mom would be so proud. When we got back to snow base, we all wanted to go again, except for my petite friend - I am sure her face was frozen. We had a great experience, and I would recommend it to anyone that comes to this beautiful town.

Everyone was right, not only are snowmobiles a way to get in and out of snowed-in places, but they are so much fun to ride!

I thought I had seen it all...
Then I stumbled upon the Ying Yang Twins last Wednesday night at the Telluride Conference Center. Needless to say, it was quite a culture shock for the small town of Mountain Village with a population of just over 1,000. The Conference Center's elegant interior finishes and stunning "boardroom" décor was quickly transformed into a scene from Spring Break on MTV. College students from Arizona, Illinois, and Iowa were spending their remaining days in Telluride on Christmas vacation and the Ying Yang Twins were a perfect finale to an historic week of skiing. The hip-hop group quickly awakened the quiet little town with hits such as "Salt Shaker", "Get Low", and a Hall & Oats sampling "Dangerous".

Ying Yang Twins

Less than two weeks before, John Oats had graced his presence in Telluride at the New Sheridan Opera House during the Holiday Concert Series featuring an all-star line up with Otis Taylor and Smokey Robinson. John Oats played with "one of the most in-demand blues/rock guitarists in the world", G.E. Smith, who played lead guitar with Hall & Oates from 1979 to 1985 and went on to front the Saturday Night Live Band. The Holiday Concert Series helped raise money for the Sheridan Arts Foundation and its ability to continue providing artistic programs for local youth (Young People's Theater) and for the Boys & Girls Clubs/Big Brothers of America, for inner city and Native American children.

Who would have ever thought you could use John Oats and Ying Yang Twins in the same sentence?

I can't wait to see who plays next here in Telluride...

Jude was leading the pack this time, with Tait, me then young Beck following at a leisurely pace. We took a slight diversion to the left to get a little air- one at a time. Bringing up the rear, Beck hit the jump, then initiated a right turn off of the little hill. And, just as Murphy's Law states, some speed freak who couldn't control his speed, let alone make a simple turn, panicked and T-Boned the little guy, sending him somersaulting down the hill, launching him clean off the ground and out of his Volkl skis. After Boo came to a stop, I skied to him to pick up the pieces and check for broken bones. I replay the hit in slow motion over and over, the vision of his head snapping backward on impact, then the look of confusion as he sat stunned, not quite in tears yet. Luckily, the extent of his war wounds are a small scrape under his right eye, with a goggle imprint, swelling and bruising under and around his eye socket. What's more stunning to me, is the reaction of the guy after the accident. I used my best effort not to scream at this guy and throw a right hook when his first comment was that it was Beck's fault, irregardless of the fact that Beck was at least 100 feet downhill of this guy, giving him enough time, had he checked his speed on the double green run, to slow down or make a VERY simple diversion to avoid collision. After I extracted an apology from him, he promptly got his skies back on, skiing away as he said that he was only leaving because I was there to take care of the boy.

Long story short, we skied to the bottom of Chair 4 and had a discussion with Ski Patrol, who within minutes, flagged the middle-aged, reckless skier down and hopefully read him the act. I am aware that accidents happen, but being a father of four, I can't imagine fleeing the scene of a crash that, to all who witnessed it, was potentially catastrophic. The moral of the story is to take great care of your kids- watch out for others' kids, and be considerate and nice this Holiday season. Beck is fine, albeit a little rattled about the whole ordeal. Me, on the other hand?? I'm a mess! I hope to never see another crash of this magnitude happen to my kids or any one else's. The Telluride Ski Resort is the most incredible place to ski and is no more dangerous than any where else! We just ran into a little bad luck, that's all. Happy skiing!

Beck's Gonna Have a Shiner!
