Random Telluride Thoughts

Posted on May 31, 2011 by Sam
Have you ever been walking down the street and realized that you're going in the complete opposite direction of where you are supposed to be going? But instead of just turning a 180 and walking back in the direction from which you came, you have to first do something like check your watch or phone or make a grand arm gesture and mutter to yourself to ensure that no one in the surrounding area thinks you're crazy by randomly switching directions on the sidewalk?

Yeah.  That was me at lunch today.

Oh and GO MAVS!!!

and we're... BACK! Top 5 Best Things to do in Telluride this Week, 5/18-5/22

Posted on May 18, 2011 by Hart
And we're... BACK! After a short hiatus that we all call "off-season" (it's a love/hate relationship), we're back in full-swing to bring you the best things to do in Telluride while you're on vacation or busy being a local. Can you believe it's May 18th??! Oh, and by the way, can you believe it's still SNOWING??! Crazyness... but we have a lot of events coming up soon to keep our minds off the big, fat, wet, snowflakes falling outside of our office window currently...
Buckle up... because it's going to be another WILD and exciting Summer! Here are a few events happening around town this weekend before our festival season kicks off next week with Mountainfilm!

Thursday, May 19th - ALASH, Tuvan Throat Singers in concert - The Sheridan Opera House will kick off its summer concert schedule with a very unique singing experience. Alash will perform its complex harmonies and western instruments while singing from their human "bagpipe-like" throats - Throat singing is a remarkable technique for singing multiple pitches at the same time. The Washington Post described their music as "utterly stunning". This will be very interesting to see in such an intimate setting - show is from 6:00pm - 8:00pm.

Saturday, May 21st - Rock and Roll Academy Spring Concert - Telluride's Rock and Roll Academy presents its annual Spring concert at the Sheridan Opera House. Watch local bands of all ages sing your favorite pop songs. I went to the Winter concert and was blown away. These kids are actually really, really, talented and rocked out! This is a great family event - 7:00pm - 10:00pm.

Saturday and Sunday, May 20th & 21st - Regional Spring Clean-up Days - Shout out to Locals... the Spring clean-up Days is a community-wide intitiative to help get rid of unwanted household objects in a clean and environmental-friendly way. Household trash, recycling, composting materials, hazardous waste and more can be taken to the Telluride High School Parking lot for safe disposal. Call the New Community Coalition for more questions: 970-728-1340

Sunday, May 22nd - Ames Conservatory Dance Recital - The Dance Academy presents 'Carnivale of Dance', a cirque-like production at the Sheridan Opera House. This show will be performed at 3pm. Check it out!

Monday, May 23rd - Telluride Arts Presents: twenty(by)telluride - twenty(by)telluride is a fun and creative monthly gathering that will showcase innovation, knowledge, ideas and creativity of Telluride community members. Monday's theme will be 'Passion' and will be held at THERE bar. This event will be held monthly throughout the summer and is FREE and open to the public. Now I'm going to take you back to Algebra class real fast...  20 slides + (20 seconds) / (a theme) x 5 incredible presenters = twenty(by)telluride

Lots more to come next week... The Llama opens this weekend and most restaurants are starting to re-open their doors! See you soon!

Springtime!

The forecast calls for rain over the next few weeks.  Spring always seems to come a month late here in Telluride.  So for us, May showers bring June flowers!

Bear Aware!

Posted on May 3, 2011 by Sam
Our wonderful sales agent Liza took pics of some black bear tracks outside our office the other day, signaling that the bears are slowly awaking from their long winter's nap, and venturing into our little town for some breakfast! So I thought I would provide a little reminder to be Bear Aware! this summer when it comes to sharing space with the wiley creatures.

At Home
-Never ever intentionally feed a bear.
-Store garbage outside in bear-proof containers or inside a detached building.
-Don't leave pet food outside where bears can get to it.
-Move hummingbird and bird feeders inside at night.
-Clean and store barbecue grills inside a structure after every use.
-Don't put fruit or melon rinds, meat or grease in a mulch or compost pile.

In Camp
-Don't store food or eat in your tent.
-Don't sleep in the clothes you wore while cooking or eating. Store these clothes outside the tent.
-Keep clothing, grills, camp stoves and tables free of grease.
-Store your food in the trunk of your car or suspend it at least 10 feet off the ground between two limbs too small for a bear to climb.
-Don't keep toiletries inside your tent or wear perfume or cosmetics.

-If you encounter a bear Back away slowly while facing a bear.
-Speak softly to the bear and try not to show fear,
-Fight back if a bear attacks you. Use rocks, sticks, binoculars or any object that may be available
